let's just stay above the moral melee
prefer the sink to the gutter
keep our sand-castle virtues
content to be a doer
as well as a thinker,
prefer lifting our pen
rather than un-sheath our sword

RIP Paul Sartin, Fiddle player, Oboe player and vocalist in Bellowhead, Faustus and Belshazzar's feast died Aged 51. Too young.. a real loss to the progressive folk/ English folk-dance movement.

One of the last remaining old school jazz legions has died, Ramsey Lewis.  I would need an hour to cover his contribution to the music world.  It's safe to say he was a great jazz pianist not only in 'straight-ahead' jazz but also in the commercial (pop) realm also.  R.I.P.

R.I.P. Earnie Shavers, One of Boxing's Hardest Punchers, Dead at 78.  This is for the older, die-hard boxing fan.  If you are that person then you'll remember 'Ron Lyle vs Earnie Shavers Sep 13, 1975'.  Arguably the two hardest hitting boxers (in their prime) in boxing history.

R.I.P. Creed Taylor.  Founder of jazz record label CTI (Creed Taylor Incorporated).  Just a few of the names who have recorded and released albums under the CTI label were, George Benson, Ron Carter, Eumir Deodato, Freddie Hubbard, Bob James, Hubert Laws and Stanley Turrentine.  CTI was known in the later 60s for its unique album covers:

Around 1990 I saw Fredy Studer together live with Burri, Magnenat, and Doran on a festival. This was one of the very best gigs ever by a band of which I hadn't heard before. Very experimental still powerful jazzy stuff. I have come across several of his projects in the meantime and was never disappointed. A big loss, RIP!

One of Switzerland’s most top influential, inspirational Lucerne astounding drummers, percussionist has surprisingly died Fredy Studer (June 16 1948 – August 22 2022) .

Schweizer Schlagzeug-Ikone Fredy Studer ist überraschend verstorben!

As a Los Angeles lifelong guitarist that was part of Lucerne Swiss progressive rock band Flame Dream, my o’ Kriens drummer Pit Furrer was his first drum teacher in the 80s, friends, and heavily influenced by this very kind, humble, and generous Swiss Luzerner drummer and percussionist Fredy Studer I personally knew, and met many times in Luzern and California.

Fredy Studer was a great drummer. A master who knew no arrogance. One that rocked steadily, but also rolled in a free, jazzy way.

Fredy was a self-taught drummer and percussionist.
Since the early seventies Fredy has performed as a freelancer with musicians ranging from "A", such as Abercrombie, to "Z", such as Zorn.
Over the past forty years, Fredy Studer worked with many different bands & projects.

Fredy gave concerts and workshops, made radio and television recordings, composed music for dance, theatre and film throughout Europe, Africa, Japan, South America, the Caribbean, Taiwan, India, Russia, United States and Canada.

Fredy had numerous prizes and honors.
Fredy Studer was one of the first drummers who incorporated open improvisation as well as straight beats into his style. Fredy's work has been recorded on more than 70 CDs LPs.

Pierre Favre (85), Daniel Humair (84) and Fredy Studer are the Swiss drummers who have left the deepest marks on international jazz. Now the youngest of these glorious three has died unexpectedly at the age of 74.
