A-Z of East European Prog

ANAMOR    Whenever I discover a Neo Prog band from Poland, I just know they're going to be good, and Anamor are no exception. I'm in Love with their singer Marta Glowacka.
I want more of Anamor so I'll add them to my "Pusty List". Smile Heart

 4 stars 2003: Anamor - Imaginacje

ANANKE
In ancient Greek folklore, Ananke is the personification of fate and inevitability. In contemporary Polish folklore, Ananke are a Neo Prog band from the unpronounceable town of Bydgoszcz, led by their equally unpronounceable keyboard player Krzysztof Pacholski. Unfortunately, all of Ananke's lyrics are sung in their native Polish language - which is not the easiest language to listen to - so somewhat inevitability,  this band are fated to be barely known or heard of outside of their native Poland. Takie jest zycie. Disapprove

ANAWA    It's magic! A crossover Prog Folk band who sound like Poland's answer to Aphrodite's Child, but at the same time, sounding like nothing you've ever heard before.
Dobre wibracje!
Are you gonna like this, gonna like it? Not a lot, not a lot. Gonna be delighted, get excited? Maybe, but not a lot...

Well, I like it anyway. Big smile

ANDROID
I'm an Automatic Lover of this humanoid Neo Prog band from Debrecen - Hungary's second-largest city. In the highly likely event that you can't find any Android CD's in the shops, you could always listen to them on your Android smartphone. Smile

ANDROMEDA SPACE RITUAL    Poland's answer to Hawkwind! Andromeda Space Ritual are from the Polish town of Kraptowice. There's nothing remotely krap about their astounding sounds and amazing music though, so get strapped in and prepare for the ride of your life as Andromeda Space Ritual take you on a psychedelic space trip across the universe without having to leave the comfort of your armchair. Why does man go into space? Space: the final frontier, with its belts of radiation, meteorites, solar winds and unknown cosmic forces.
Man has always risked the unknown, precisely because it's unknown, and man's nature is to own...

ANKH
The Ankh is the ancient Egyptian symbol of eternal life, and this powerful Heavy Prog band looks set to be around for a long time.  It may be pure frippery to say this, but Ankh are Poland's answer to King Crimson - only better! Co ja powiedzialem! Shocked

Only a pity, they're almost unknown and very low rated on PA and RYM Big smile, but anyway I guess, we'll be able soon to talk Polish together. Big smile

A-Z of East European Prog

ANNALIST    What is Poland most famous for? Well, there's Pope John Paul II of course; and then there's Polish plumbers; spicy Polish sausage; and Polish 100% proof white spirit that will blow your head clean off; and last but not least, there's Neo Prog, where Poland is in pole position in the East European progosphere. Polish band Annalist won't come 'round and unblock your sink or serve you up a tasty sausage, but they will entertain you with some rather excellent prog (especially on their amazing debut album). It should be a papal edict that everyone listens to some Polish prog at least once in their life. The discography below even includes Annalist's latest 2012 offering, "Syrinx", which hasn't yet made its way into ProgArchives hallowed halls. Smile

It's good to know I'm not alone in preferring Ankh over King Crimson. Smile

And while we're on the subject of King Crimson, I Love Rock & Roll, especially when it's performed by Robert & Toyah.  Thumbs Up

ANTETHIC
The Russians are coming, and they come bearing gifts of dour, post-communist Post Rock. Well, what else are you going to do but drink vodka, curse Putin and create gloomy, doom-laden shoegaze music together, when you live in a draughty, cramped apartment in Leningrad? It may be antithetical to say this, but Russia has never been the Magical World of plenty that Stalinist propaganda would have you believe. Ouch

Yes, but I think, it's better to be cautious with not to creating too gloomy picture of the life in Russia, or the whole "East European" region in the pre-1989 years for that sake. I can for instance tell that my experiences as a child with the life in Poland , and that means until 1972, were much more positive than the general picture of it drawn in the Western media. Smile

When that is said, I have to stress that I definitely am not fond of Stalinist propaganda and other methods, and it worries me to see what I think of as significantly increased usage of them in the Western economic and political life in the last 10-15 years. Ermm
