Andrea's post of new Italian band Aether in his Italian Prog thread got me going back to this amazing album from 2005. It has been my favorite album of the Naughties since I first heard it and stands even taller in my esteem today. Amazing collection of songs, all done, of course, in the "classic prog" style with all analog instruments (as was Colossus Magazine/Musea Records' requirement of the contributing artists). Three CDs, three 20+ minute long epics per disc, nine epics to represent various sections or passages of Homer's classic tale.
If I have to pick, I'd have to take GLASS HAMMER's rendering of chapters Seven and Eight: "At the Court of Alkinoos" barely over Brazilian band AETHER's "Chapter IX." Many of these epics are my all-time favorite songs/compositions from these individual bands--four of them are among my All-Time Favorite Prog Epics. My favorites, in order: "At the Court of Alkinoos" by GLASS HAMMER (U.S.A.) (40/40) "Chapter XI" by AETHER (Brasilia) (40/40) "Sulle Ali Del Sogno Odissea" by C.A.P. (Consorzio Acqua Potible) (Italia) (59/60) "Il Regreso" by NEXUS (Argentinia) (57/60) "From Ismarus to the Land of Death" by XII ALFONSO (France) (43.5/50) "Étranger en sa demeure" by MINIMUM VITAL (France) (39/45) "Of Longings, Suitors, Deiities, and Quests..." by NATHAN MAHL (Canada) (42.5/50) "Chapter VII: Hecatombe" by TÉMPANO (Venezuela) (42.25/50) "Minds of Mortal Men - Meander Tales" by SIMON SAYS (Sweden) (41.75/50) If this wonderful collection of songs is as-yet unfamiliar to you, I STRONGLY urge you to take some time to try them out: they're all available as individual songs in their full form on YouTube. This brings back some great memories of going through just about all the various artist albums I owned all around the same time, and it was such a great way to experience new bands for me without purchasing such back in the day.
Minimum Vital is my pick and an easy one at that but my biggest issue with various albums like this is my desire for consistent albums. Most had been very hit and miss for my tastes but all so interesting.

Minds of Mortal Men is Simon Says doing their thing, and it's a tiny masterpiece. Also, an honorable mention goes to the Tempano track, which is really cool. Also, I always thought Tempano were from Venezuela, not Colombia. Maybe some band members were from Colombia, and others from Venezuela?

You are correct, Marek: Témpano were from Venezuala. My bad! Thank you! I'll make the corrections. |

I don't remember all the tracks on this (it's a long listen and haven't listened to it in several years), but Simon Says was the most notable for me. Nexus might be my second choice.
