Here's a newbie friendly poll but not just for newbies. I'm not sure why I never thought of this one before.

"Knife Edge," by far. ELP's debut is a perfect record, and that's one of its highlights.

Knife Edge. Not a fan of The Knife. A bunch of ideas crammed together done far better on later albums.

Oh yes, I think I remember now you saying in another thread that you were banned from voting in polls. That seems like such a strange way to punish someone on here. If they don't like you they should just ban you from the website altogether. Confused

The Knife was influenced by The Nice - Rondo. Apparently Rutherford was a fan of The Nice and took the Emerlist Davjack album to Banks who was then inspired to write the main organ riff on The Knife. I would normally want to vote ELP but I absolutely love The Knife so much it's one those tracks I can never tire of. Also I prefer the live version of Knife Edge ELP played at the Lyceum in 1970 (you can find it on the deluxe version of PAAE where the whole concert is available in audio format). I enjoy the way the extended it and Palmer sounds a lot smoother to me. Mostly though it's a hangover of the sixties psyche scene and maybe even some appreciation for The Doors spilling out.

I always thought it was inspired by the ELP song "knife edge" hence the title but I guess not. The two songs were probably released too close together for that to happen anyway but I guess anything is possible. Your statement makes more sense though.

ELP, by a very small margin. Both are great songs.

Genesis get my vote ( Genesis Live version with Phil is so powerful) but I like both tracks indeed

Hi,

Kinda of bad comparison in my book, but it is what it is. In terms of character and when it came out, and made itself known and seen, I think that "Knife Edge" is way more valuable and important and that while the Genesis piece is nice, it is a bit over blown, and (possibly) overrated as well.

I like those early Genesis albums, but did not bother with them until a year or two after SEBTP ... while the ELP stuff I had from the first day, when I got PAAE immediately to compare to other classical pieces, which, generally speaking stands up nicely, but very different. My only take on some of the Genesis stuff was that the "illusion" side of things was meant to be meaningful and forceful, so the band did not feel kinda ignored for cheap pop tunes, and songs. Also, if the costumes get taken out, I think that a lot of their stuff falls kinda flat, and a singer has to be way up and above and beyond the capabilities to make the material come alive. While I have always liked PG, I don't think he is that singer, and in his solo albums you can see the limitations by sounding similar and the lyrical design getting repetitive to hide his lack of ability. He does have a lot of nice things, I will admit.
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!
