Hi,

On the Japanese and Indonesian for the 70's ...

Sadistic Mika Band - Hot Menu (1975)
Yellow Magic Orchestra - 1st (1978)

YMO founding member Yukihiro Takahashi (drums) played with the Sadistic Mika Band.

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

Peoples responses confused me a bit at first....I gave early on a list of Italian artists which is what you asked for at first, then people gave other areas either in a bunch or just one area...so didn't know when I should have posted my German artists but finally did as they are so close to my heart....

I quite enjoy the first two Supersister albums (Present From Nancy, To The Highest Bidder).   What's not to love about a Canterbury Scene band from The Hague?

A lot of good recommendations in this thread, a few I have listened to , mainly German bands, but not Italian ones[ except for couple of PFM's works]. Whilst Can and Faust are mentioned [I would personally put in Faust IV over So Far though I like both of them very much],Kraftwerk seems to be missing. Their albums like 'Computerworld' like landmarks though I am not sure if they are even rock or proper electronic at this point.

Edit: I listened to Quella Vecchia Locanda's first effort and was surprisingly pleased. I won't say it was as good as PFM's peak but good enough to add to one's collection for regular listening.I scoured "All Music" for this LP and it states one of the genre as Western European Traditions though it doesn't sadly define the genre. I always linked it with some sort of classical listening and assumed the band was more mixing different instruments and creating good old prog sound reminiscent of so many bands

Not exactly my personal cup of tea, but in general these two albums are probably some of the most appreciated Dutch Prog albums.

The quality of Prog in the second half of the '70s has been discussed much, and it has also been pointed at the difference between UK and non-UK artists in that concern. Here're some non-British albums from that period which I consider to be quite as good as the average of classic Prog, and which also have been at least quite much appreciated in general:

Area (I) Crac! (1975)*
Atoll (F)   L’Araignee-mal (1975)
Clearlight (F)   Clearlight Symphony (1975)
Gong (F)   Shamal (1975)*
Magma (F)   Üdü Wüdü   (1976)
Pulsar (F)   Halloween (1977)
Eskaton (F)   4 Visions   (1978, 1981)
Atila (ES) - Reviure (1978)
Crack (ES) - Si Todo Hiciera Crack (1979)
Gotic (ES) - Escenes   (1978)
Iman, Califato Independiente (ES) - s/t (1978)
Triana (ES) - Triana (El Patio) (1975)
Eloy (D) - Ocean (1977)
SBB (PL)    2: Nowy Horyzont     (1975)
Czesław Niemen (PL)   Niemen Aerolit   (1975)
Phoenix (Romania)    Cantofabule (1975)
Far East Family Band (J) - Nipponjin   (1975)
Osamu Kitajima   (J) - Benzaiten    (1976)*
Guruh Gipsy (Indonesia) - Guruh Gipsy    (1977)
Harmonium (CAN) - Les Cinq Saisons   (1975)*
Happy the Man (USA) - Happy the Man   (1977)
Crucis (ARG) - Los Delirios del Mariscal (1976)
M.I.A. (ARG) - Cornonstipicum (1978)
* a kind of Prog

It has to be noticed though that almost half of these albums are from 1975, and there's of course the question of what exactly consider to be Prog.
