I know similar topics have come up before, and I was put in mind of this due to another topic (see some of the comments HERE.
What are some of you strategies, approaches, means to discovering new-to-you music? I find music when I'm looking for it, and sometimes when I'm not searching but just notice it referenced... This could be contemporary music or not. I want to focus on how you find music now or in fairly recent times more than in the distant past, although comparing that is of interest too. I have liked to use the Rate Your Music charts to find albums, either with looking up the general music charts for a specific year or adding filters such as genres and country. I do like how customisable those charts are for search results, that one can use and search multiple tags for albums. While I don't post at Reddit, sometimes I have google searched specific kinds of discussions at that site. This has helped to find names I like with similarities to others I like. I think I discovered Vanishing Twin through breading a thread there on bands with similarities to Stereolab and Broadcast. Sometimes I discover something I like that comes up on youtube, at other times I find things through the Prog Archives forum. A name might come up that piques my interest, a thread is made on a band or it comes up in a topic, or ones that are specifically recommended to me. At one time I did discover many albums thanks to blogs. And I did download albums that had not been re-released about 20 years ago. I felt no guilt about that if it was not available by other means (not including buying old used albums, often for a very pretty penny, which I have done), but then quite a few of those albums gained traction as it gained audiences via the internet and did get released on CD. So there was more than one silver lining to such sharing of obscurities -- people discovering music, exposure, and the music getting re-released. Nowadays anyone can stream most of what they want, although I do like physical product. And what are some of you newest discoveries of which you are very fond and how did you find them? A big one for me and a big name has been Sufjan Stevens. I knew music of his, but quite recently I started to deeply explore his discography. I can't recall how or why that happened (some associative process). While I have known Fishmans' Long Season for years, I noticed on the rateyourmusic charts how high one of its live albums ranks. I checked it out and fell in love with it, which led to me listening more deeply to other Fishmans music (and to suggesting the band for PA). The summer before last was rough, and I had been playing Weyes Blood on youtube, which I love, and a track from Beach House started playing which I loved. That led to me getting quite a few albums by Beach House. I got really, really into Boards of Canada, Portishhead, Swans, Stereolab, Radiohead and Godspeed You! Black Emperor over the past decade for various reasons -- Portishead and Stereolab due to a Chris Morris radio show that was put it up in podcast form called Blue Jam that mixes music with surreal and dark comedy. Lingua Ignota was a big discovery to me of the past few years, and that was thanks to a PA topic on her music. I also have discovered lots through the Interactive Polls which I then explored albums by, and as, said, specific recommendations to me. |

Watching while most appreciating a sunset in the moment need not diminish all the glorious sunsets I observed before. It can be much like that with music for me; immersed in experiencing the moment.

I spend a lot of time on ProgEars and ProgArchives where I hear a lot of suggestions. On PA its primarily from the genre teams I'm on (Eclectic and Avant), on PE they have a lot of posters who are into the avant rock and jazz I'm into so I track their suggestions.
Bandcamp is a source of a lot, with lots of emails coming from labels I know are releasing the types of music i like. I fairly regularly deep dive into a genre and check out lots of bands tagged as stuff I'd like. Facebook isn't bad for new music if you know what to look for. Festivals have been a great source of discovering new bands. Progrock.com radio shows provide some stuff but thats mainly one show dedicate to Psyche where stuff interests me. |

same here (different genre team, though) Bandcamp is the most precious way to discover a new (to me) artiste. It's replaced very advantageously the MySpace pages. ![]() . |

I agree. PA threads and polls discussions still are a source of finding out about bands and albums (after all these years). Metalstorm and its forum are a source for all things metal. ![]() Edited by Cristi - April 16 2025 at 03:56 |

https://awesomeprog.com is a pretty good source because it basically combines RYM, PA and Bandcamp.

Sometimes I check out news from the local recording studio in my town, since they tend to give shoutouts to whatever band they record.

Hi,
Different ways ... and lately I have been spending time listening to the groupings that are done by JMA, which is much better for me, instead of a numeric listing, even though I know it is not meant to be about the numbers, but it throws me off. Kinda hurts to see a good band listed at 43 and some cheap copy of progrock listed on top ... it's not what the idea for "progressive music" was all about 50 years ago, but I doubt that history is something that many folks here appreciate and take a hint from ... some comments are terribly out of time and place, and I tend to think disrespectful. Having a sister in Paris, one in Luxemburg, and spread out all over, would seem like you get to hear a lot of different things, but my mind and ears are already open to these international things, and have been for 40+ years, so the addition, or finding of something new is always a treat and appreciated ... and I like the surprises ... I don't listen by being told kind of thing at all! I have to live in the moment, and the surprise makes that moment a great one! |
|
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

Thanks guys, what are some particular bands and albums that have stood out for you of recent years? black midi and Squid have been two big ones for me. My eldest loves Black Country, New Road (not so much the latest album).
Of the 2010 plus period, I, of course as I often mention them, love Swans (especially The Glowing Man, To Be Kind, The Beggar and The Seer) and Anna von Hausswolff in PA (Ceremony, The Miraculous, Dead Magic are all great), Cisnienie's Brass Album and JazzArt Underground are excellent, think Bowie's Blackstar is truly great, find Richard Dawson's Peasant and Henki Great, love Oneohtrix Point never, especially for Garden of Delete, think Godspeed You! Black Emperor keeps on putting out excellent music, Susanne Sundfør for various, Chelsea Wolfe, Uboa, Kikagaku Moyo, The Smile, Radiohead's Moon Shaped Pool, Kayo Dot and various King Gizz... North Sea Radio Orchetra's I a Moon is wonderful, and I like Dronne, William D Drake... EDIT: and North Sea Radio orchestra is set to have an album out on May 30, 2025 called Special Powers. Outside of PA I love works by Julia Holter (Aviary and Have You In My Wilderness are two faves), Weyes Blood (And in the Darkness, Hearts Aglow as well as Titanic and Front Row Seat to Earth are very good), Lingua Ignota especially with Caligula and Sinner Get Ready, Bruno Pernadas with various but his Crocodiles album is awesome, Beach House with lots but I especially love Bloom and Once Twice Melody, The Necks has continued to put out good music, love Beth Gibbons latest, Deerhunter's Halcyon Digest is great, Jenny Hval, Mid-Air Thief, Xiu Xiu, Boards of Canada's Tomorrow's Harvest, Daughters I like, otay:onii, Dear Laika, Melody's Echo Chamber, Vanishing Twin, Pan Daijing, Perfume Genius, BRUIT, etc. etc. And of course Sufjan Stevens (sticking with 2010 plus) for All Delighted People EP, Age of Adz, Javelin and Carrie and Lowell especially. And Joanna Newsom's Have One on Me is wonderful, and I like Divers. I also like various St. Vincent and PJ Harvey and Nick Cave... Lots of progressive music in and out of PA. I don't need music to sound original to appreciate it. One of my favourite modern projects in PA is Kosmisher Laufer and that is music, with a quite elaborate backstory, that pretends to be of the past. That in itself is quite creative and shows talent. As for numbered lists, to me that can be a starting point, getting me to check out some music, and I might go down a list looking at what looks to be of interest to me (I like to read descriptions) and briefly check those out on youtube to see what is likely to appeal. I commonly use filters with lists, be it year or otherwise. I like to have my ears be the judge, not be the judge of whether it's good, but whether I appreciate it. And if I don't appreciate it now, I might down the road. I know that a lot of popular at PA music is not really to my tastes, and I don't care that much about popularity except that I do like sharing that which is meaningful to me and I do hope that more music I like gets made and there are chances at seeing various on concert (and for that popularity helps). And if an act achieves some levels of popularity, then I, of course, am more likely to hear of it. Edited by Logan - April 16 2025 at 11:34 |

One of the reasons in this case would be that you have not posted a list with the good band at the top. These lists are better the more experienced users participate. As long as many of the knowledgeable members here ignore them, the mainstream releases will continue to dominate. But regardless these lists are still useful to me, or anyone else who understands that a release at #43 is not necessarily worse than the ones at the top. I often go to these lists and browse all the pages, filtering out stuff I already know and listen to whatever seems interesting. Edited by MikeEnRegalia - April 16 2025 at 14:16 |

How have I been discovering great music as of late? RYM certainly is a big factor, and since I'm monitoring RYM for my website, I come across most new releases that get some attraction there. Having said that, believe it or not, but not all great releases are even listed there. I still read an independent German print magazine (Rock Hard) which reliably leads me to pleasant discoveries (which also end up in the AP database of course). Other than that, it's the forum discussions here. Which - you guessed it - also tend to end up at AP. Not to mention the small group of well versed users which already contributes directly there.

For new-to-me bands, I regularly check these:
New Prog Releases: https://newprogreleases.blogspot.com/ ProGGnossis: https://www.proggnosis.com/ Both have links to Bandcamp or other sites where I can check out the music for myself. Also, for bands that I already enjoy, I check their facebook page when listening (MusicBee lets me do this with one click) to see if anything new is in the works. |
