It can be a band or artist.

We can do more that one band, and I have many favourite bands, but if using embeds, please keep it to no more than three per posts. The idea is to try to list a cover version you like of a song you like by the band, a cover by the "fave" band or artist of another band/song you like, and a fave song of the band.

If you to or can only do two of these fields, that's fine.

I'll start with Swans. It's been a very important band to me, and tomorrow my time-zone on May 30th, its newest, Birthing, will by officially released. In places like Australia and New Zealand it already has been released

"Killing For Company" (a cover of Swans by Tempers)

"Love Will Tear Us Apart" (a cover of Joy Division by Swans)

"Helpless Child" (Swans doing Swans)

Watching while most appreciating a sunset in the moment need not diminish all the glorious sunsets I have observed before. It can be much like that with music for me.

I know that cover kinds of topics tend not to be very popular here. I can find covers really interesting and have posed here at PA the idea that some here might like cover material of a band where they are not into the band for certain reasons.

By the way, I tend to "google" search things, which might take me to Reddit or whatever, but this site can be useful for such things (one can look up both what a band covered and what others covered of that band, but it is more limited than I would like): https://www.whosampled.com/ And I hav used Second Hand Songs before https://secondhandsongs.com/ and searching youtube.

Here is Steven Wilson covering "Stonegage Dinosaurs" by Cardiacs:

Here is Cardiacs covering "Susannah's Still Alive" by The Kinks.

And here is the Cardiacs song that got me into Cardiacs done by Cardiacs, "Dirty Boy"

Robert Wyatt's Anja Garbarek-cover is so achingly beautiful it brings a tear to my eye.

This Secret Chiefs 3 cover of Ananda Shankar is rather close to the (brilliant) original, but it sure packs a punch - which makes a difference

I'm much more a fan of Susanne Sundfør than Röyksopp (but I do like them quite a bit), and probably because of her voice alone, I think this Depeche Mode-cover is a lot stronger than the original

^ I love Wyatt's version of "Stay Tuned" (and Comicopera is one of my favourite albums by him, all are below Rock bottom for me, but RB is such a masterpiece).

If I were covering or doing Robert Wyatt (which I would have as one of my favourites as an artists and for covers), which I will here...

The Unthanks cover of Robert Wyatt's "Sea Song" (Rachel Unthanks has several great covers)

Robert Wyatt covers Peter Gabriel's "Biko"

And Robert Wyatt doing Robert Wyatt with "Little Red Robin Hood Hit the Road":

Note: I prefer Wyatt's cover of "Stay Tuned", but much like mentioning Steven Wilson before, Gabriel is a very big name in PA and so I wanted to mention that cover.

And I know Portishead is not in PA (although i think Third in particular is on the prog spectrum, or prog related/adjacent) but here is

Here is Portishead doing "SOS" by ABBA.

Here is My Dying Bride (which is in PA) doing "Roads" by Portishead:

And here is Portishead doing Portishead with a song ("The Rip") that has been very special to me:

I want to do Stereolab now:

Here is Stereolab's "One Note Samba / Surfboard" (with Herbie Mann on flute) which covers "Surfboard" by Roberto Menescal and "Samba de Uma Nota So" by João Gilberto.

Here is Visioneers cover of Stereolab's "Come And Play In The Milky Night":

And here i a favourite of mine by Sterelab done by Stereolab ("Ticker-Tape of the Unconscious"):

Hi,

No tears for Stackridge (or the Korgis?).
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

^ I had heard that before (I think from you), briefly looked it up, and may just be tired (got to sleep after midnight and woke up at 3 am as usual), but not really getting how it fits the aim of the topic. I hope you or someone else if they get it will explain.

I have moved this to General Music Discussions (better to "cover" diverse music) by the way.

The idea is for the poster to choose a band or artist to "cover" so to speak. Choose a song/track that is not an original of that band (a cover) and mention the details. Also mention another band or artist that covered your band/artist of choice. Then choose a favourite track of your from the artist or band (an original). Here is another example (and I get to use Komeda, which is a favourite act of mine of the Stereolab, Broadcast, and vanishing Twin ilk to cover Can).

Can

Here is Can covering "Stille Nacht" ("Silent Night") by Josef Mohr and Franz Xaver Gruber):

Here is Komeda covering "Mushroom" by Can:

Here is Can with its "Vitamin C":

Hi,

MONSOON (first Sheila Chandra band) did The Beatles Tomorrow Never Knows .. I think it is in the "Third Eye" album. A really nice version, btw.

(Goodness, we just about should make this a Beatles cover thing ... if we don't hit 100 we're not trying or listening!)

I'd rather we didn't just cover The Beatles (you might do that topic). I'd rather see a variety of favourites from a variety of people who choose a band or artist to highlight, list a cover by the band or artist being highlighted, list a cover of the band/artist being focused on by another band/artists, and an original by that band that one choose. It's not meant to be about quantity and not everyone likes The Beatles. And this topic is meant to have a specific format.

Still confused with the Stackridge reference, by the way (not a band I have been into or explored much). Quite often I make references, think people will get it, and end up having to explain.

Of course The Beatles has been covered hugely. As a child, the first cover song I remember hearing and loving was the Flying Lizards cover of "Money (That's What I want)". One of the acts I have been listening to a lot in recent years is Siouxsie and the Banshees, and they wonderfully covered the Beatles Dear Prudence -- click to hear -- and that put me in mind of Siouxsie... but I will do its cover of Kraftwerk instead.

So for Siouxsie and the Banshees:

Here is Siouxsie and the Banshees covering Kraftwerk's "Hall of Mirrors"

Here is LCD Soundsystem covering Siouxsie and the Banshees's "Slowdive":

And here is Siouxsie and the Banshees with its original "Isreal":

i would rather we try to stick with that format (but two out of three of those per post is okay too). I thought someone might have have come in with Yes, Genesis or Rush by now. The fun for me is seeing and hearing stuff I might not know from others, how our favourites have been covered, how our favourites have covered others, and hearing about and hearing music special to us from our favourites. Sometimes I have thought that one might not like a band, but still like covers of it, or even covers by it... Those perhaps could be gateways into appreciating the music. And I have thought that recognising the appreciation that others acts have given acts by covering them is another way to factor in respect for artists. I like to recognise how significant a band or artist is to another artist, and a cover song can work like a great homage/ show of apprecaition (be it of a big name or a small name).

I was at my son's high school for a talent show last night and a different one with my son and others a few days ago and was really impressed with the breadth of talent. My son performed his own original compositions on piano (he is self-taught), one girl with a The Beatles tee-shirt and guitar played Radiohead's "Creep", one band played a post-punk song from the 80s, some played jazz on instruments and most of it was classical (lots of very good pianists there). One flute duet almost moved me to tears, and one person played one of the most avant-garde pieces I have heard on the clarinet (I might have though it was just his playing that made it sound avant-garde, but he is of a very high level of instrumental proficiency. He did a drum performance before, dude has serious jazz hands). And one person did his slam poetry. So glad to see the youth embracing music and the arts and such talent. I enjoyed being in youth orchestra (on trumpet).
