Paul, if you're out there, what's going on?

It's not the same without you.

Don't worry, I'm fine. I'm still waiting patiently for Logan to reactivate the WYSIWYG post editor - which will hopefully be sooner rather than later - then I can get back to doing some serious bloggin' and pollin' again. In the meantime, here's a nice song from Diana Ross.

See here, Paul: CLICK I tested it the other day when M@X was on and there is no improvement. I'm leaving this in his hands. Others can try to contact him if they like and ask about it.

I thought it had been a bit quiet round here just lately.

That's up to to him or any others. I don't see harm in trying. Just don't wait on me. I have tried to contact M@X (as you might have read from the thread I linked to), and I have put plenty of time into this, and a couple of others have talked about contacting him who have his ear more than I. At least one has spoken to him about it directly. I have tested it various times with no improvement. I'm just saying that I now wish to leave this in M@X's (the one who owns and manages this site) hands. I've done what I feel I can, and is reasonable, under the circumstances. The problem has not got better, and there is only so much I can do for this site I volunteer for. I am confident that keeping it enabled would cause more problems than its worth unless the issue is fixed. While Paul has had problems using it without the editor, the other comments I have had have been positive about having disabled the editor. I think one might have to adapt if deciding to continue to use this site. And it might get fixed with or without my involvement (I think I know the issue, but my involvement in those things is limited). I'm not a site developer. So yeah, M@X is the best one to try to contact about such stuff (I have only spoken with him a few times in my years here -- we really don't know each other).

The whole posting on PA has been an ongoing issue for many years, for whatever reasons. It keeps me from engaging more, but that's fine, it is what it is.

There are other sites that can help me waste my time on the interwebs....LOL

For example news of Brian Wilson already has 44 pages at Hoffman site. Cra-cra!

It's even gotten worse lately, actually.

At work, we have migrated to Windows 11 (and Welcome) last week, and the web browser refuse access to PA because of digital safety issues.

at home, nothing has changed between last week and this one

^ yep, well I do think M@X has been trying to fix various things. The forum software might need very significant updating. The forum should be the easiest part of this site to fix. By the way, I hope backups are being made constantly, especially of the database, and that multiple people have access to those backups. And that if this site should do down completely, the data can be migrated to a new one. I do fear it will all just be gone one day, which would be a travesty considering the huge amount of work that has gone into this site by so many.

^^ I often do find it a struggle to have conversations and chat (actual back-and-forth communication) here, and joking around with people is tough. I wish this forum was more active. I do care very much about this forum and wish it could be a very active, warm, friendly and welcoming environment for diverse people. I love to chat music with people and riff.

At the forum I belonged to before joining PA which had members from around the world, we tried to set some times where most of the members would be online so we could all chat together. It felt like a party, but with no mess to clear up afterwards. I had an actual party at my house the other day -- that was fun, had been a while, but that was a lot of work.

P.S. TBH, I would like to find a more active general forum (not like Reddit), and one where more people are into the kinds of music I am into and the people are warm, welcoming, humorous ideally, and hopefully people are passionate about music. I do think I will finally build my own (and at least me, myself and I will have some fun conversations).

^ I posted there a bit many years ago, but I didn't feel welcomed at the time. I was warmly welcomed here and felt wanted. Sometimes it's the luck of the draw with who or if anyone responds (and first impressions and all that).

I do visit there now and then to read what's going on but I hardly ever see any discussions going on that makes me want to join in. And to be honest, some of the members there kind of make me nervous. Just not sure it looks like a fun community to chat about music and other stuff with, and I'm not too keen on the format. Although I don't quite see it fitting his style (not that one can't try other styles), I wonder if Paul has tried there.

By the way, I know it can take time to adapt to and acclimate to a new site (not up to the site to adapt to you) and one should not judge hastily. Gotta spend time there in the discussions and getting to know the people and how best to interact with them. At the time the people I dealt with seemed cold and just too matter-of-fact, I guess. I didn't get the "personal" touch, playfulness, or warm hands that I like from other massage parlours.... Oh, I think my mind wandered.

I've never done Reddit.....Seems weird. And I remember trying out Prog Ears but was not interesting as well.

I know most here have no fondness of Steve Hoffman Forums, but that place is extremely active! In the Music Corner is all threads about everything music. Within that there are many many threads on Prog and even band focused....Its all genres so you have to find the Prog ones and stick to a couple to follow.

I know a few past PA'ers that went there, most recently JD (Canada). He is active there now. I've been there for years and its my hang out place now.

No slam on current PA members but over the past 10-12yrs many have left that engaged more with those kinds of music threads......Oh well

^^^ No, I've never visited Progressive Ears or any other prog websites. ProgArchives is the only one for me. I've just been catching up with listening to my neglected CD collection while I've been away from here, which sadly doesn't include any albums by the George Baker Selection.

My brother had issues with Reddit (like people ganging up on someone that has unpopular opinions), but I've never even looked at it. He ended up getting a few undeserved bans (says he) and he stopped going there.

As for Hoffman, some of those guys are geeks, nerds & dorks of all walks of music.

^ Reddit can be great for info, it can depend on who is moderating/hosting what subreddit. I don't post there but I often use it as a reference (I google search reddit) and have found many fantastic recommendations through the forums there.

^^ That's good, Paul. Posts would look like a total unreadable mess with the WYSISWYG editor enabled for people. I don't know if or when it might be fixed. This site has a lot of issues, and I just hope the site continues (although improvements would be desired, and some changes are needed for it to continue methinks).

By the way I wonder if it might help making long playlists to ease having to add lots of hyperlinks. Although if you copy-paste the code it is quite easy. And especially with so many full albums being legally available, it can help. And of course there are ways to copy in stars. And we tend to be pretty okay with that with full albums (has become so common). If youtube has a problem, they can deal with that. And composing in a word processor program can help. I post in the little text boxes and so it often comes out like a mess. I use Word for work, and I don't want anything I do for PA to feel like work even if I could do things better and more efficiently by composing elsewhere. Just thinking out loud.

Where there's a Will, there's a way, as the saying goes.

While this forum is way too slow, The Hoffman forums have another issue for me, the topics go on so long. I'm someone who likes to read topics from the start sequentially and I tend to avoid the really long topics at PA. I do look at the What Are You Listening to one now and then, and when it came to the What Are you Easing or Drinking one, my young kids and I had a game on what Wan With Hat would mention next. Will it be Coffee, Tea?, Banana?

To me the ideal would be about 20, 30, 40 or 50 active friendly and conversational members who, ideally (not all need to of course), love, say, Sufjan Stevens, Fishmans, The Necks, Boards of Canada, Portishead, Weyes Blood, Swans, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Beach House (to mention a few acts that I have been very into in recent times). Or classics like Magma, Art Zoyd, Can, Popol Vuh and VdGG etc. I can dream, some dream of theaters, I dream of tangerines.

I love to talk about the music I am passionate about, and maybe the Steve Hoffman community is diverse enough to talk music I love with various people. I am lucky at PA that there are few members here who are into the stuff I love, so I should not complain about this forum. And I'm happy to have people like you who I just enjoy being at the forum with (I like your humour and attitudes).

But still, back-and-forth chat/ conversation, and riffin and rappin', can be a real challenge at a slow forum like this (not that I always want that, and I tend to be multi-tasking at the forum).

With Reddit of course one can find or make most any niche community you like, but I like seeing and discussing more diverse things with a more diverse audience (and don't want to fall too much into my own little bubbles).

I do wish PA's forum was more "discussion" focused. It seems like there is very little actual conversation here commonly (very list and poll focused, and I do like making lists and polls). It is common for someone to post a topic and people respond, but it commonly does not feel like people actually talking together, exploring ideas together, or joking around together, and you get a lot of super terse comments. I tend two write too long which can be seen as worse than writing really short comments -- I have a disorderly brain, as my wife says, get to the point. One can be like a fork with multiple points, now where was I?

^ Well I hear ya about the long threads.....I can't do much of that, as I tend to come and go with them. Unfortunately on Hoffman if you leave for a day there's like 20-30 pages sometimes that you have to catch up on LOL. Here, its more like a month and maybe there are 2 new posts LOL.

I would look at Hoffman as I have seen posts on obscure bands like you like, and I really bet if you started one it would be well attended.

Sure there are doofusses, hairballs, nincompoops, douchebags galore on Hoffman but that's because the online numbers are huge...Like right now there are 3,000 members online there, bound to be a few bad apples.

I would try it, you might like it...
