Last thread of this topic was in 2011.
What if the original King Crimson lineup of Fripp, Lake, McDonald, and Giles (and Sinfield) stayed together to record one more album? Fripp once wrote "Poseidon is half of a stunning album. The Birdman Suite from MacDonald & Giles would have provided the other half.", suggesting that Birdman would have formed the basis of side two. https://www.dgmlive.com/diaries/Robert%20Fripp/motel-acceptably-modest-rising-to-210916 "Flight of the Ibis" from McDonald & Giles likely would have retained the "Cadence and Cascade" lyrics. The other songs from that album could have been reworked by the whole band for inclusion, possibly creating a double album. Greg Lake's "Lucky Man" was also rehearsed by the band. https://www.dgmlive.com/news/basement-dwellers-in-1969 With two full albums plus Greg Lake's compositions from Emerson, Lake & Palmer's debut album, there's a ton of material for a single or double album. What would an alternative "In the Wake of Poseidon" with the original lineup look like? And what afterwards? How would this have affected the rest of King Crimson's history and Emerson, Lake & Palmer? Feel free to share your hypothetical track lists for what could have been. |

I'm really out of my depth here without doing any research. I wish I had something intelligent and knowledgeable to add to this topic now, but I want to mention that I love In the Wake of Poseidon as it is.

Poseidon would qualify as one of those albums with the thread "Bonus tracks/B-Sides replacing actual album tracks" with Groon replacing those useless Peace pieces. I'm not a big fan of the Mars (Devil's Triangle) piece either.
The A-side is rather good if you don't mind repeating Court's A-side. Cat's Food is excellent, and with Groon and Birdman, this would've been an outstanding album side. Sooooo, a perfectible album. If McD (now RIP) regretted leaving decades later, Giles is not sorry, because he couldn't stand the gradual control take-over of the band from Frippy - the latter who called PG a "c**t-in-chief" in the ultimate rockumentary of the band. . It would if Birdman was more concise so that all three songs would fit on that one side. If not, maybe Cat Food and Groon still get a non-album single release.
We can't predict exactly what would happen, but something tells me McDonald, Giles, and Lake all would have left right after this album and we still would have gotten the rest of the King Crimson albums as they were, and ELP would be unaffected unless "Lucky Man" or "Take a Pebble" ended up on Poseidon. |

I have the M&G album and have listened to it a few times but need to revisit it again. Based on my three listens or so I like it quite a bit. However, I find it to be a bit different and less symphonic than Poseidon or even Court. Pete Sinfield's Still is another good one.

Several songs on McDonald and Giles were actually written when King Crimson were touring ...which is telling. Somewhere along the way it seemed that they planned to record some of these songs for the next K.C. release. They were in fact performing "Trees" in 1969, but in the end was chosen for the Birdman Suite.
Michael Giles couldn't stand the road. As he stated in the past..you were cooped up on a bus or flown by plane....then in a hotel...then on to a stage...then back on a bus...which!..is the routine of a circus worker or circus animal . Constantly being caged back up after a performance then transported ...then let loose to perform again. I actually lived that life in the 70s and 80s. If you're not cut out for it ...it will drive you mad. On the Michael Giles album Progress you see him standing by the railroad tracks with his drum gear ...possibly waiting for the train into London to do sessions. Maybe he was happier knowing that he could return home each night. Nevertheless traveling with King Crimson wasn't a healthy way of life for him. Edited by Jacob Schoolcraft - June 10 2025 at 17:06 |

Hi, I can honestly say, I do NOT. It would have been the same thing, chapter 2, more than likely, even though we think that some parts and pieces might have shown up and be somewhere else. I like how things ended up. I feel bad for the 2 folks that got hurt in the whole thing, and even for RF's attitude at the time, though in the special on KC he regretted some things he said or did. I kinda think that we are spending time, regurgitating some really bizarre and weird stuff. In general, all we are doing is second guessing everyone's choices and parts in all this. And while things might not have turned out as we might have liked to see, in my book they turned out perfect ... ELP went on to do magnificent work. KC continued to do magnificent work. It is the nature of things ... and rock music is not going to change that anytime soon, specially when it is controlled by fans, and has nothing to do with an art form at all when the special parts that make it progressive or different from anything else, are removed ... so it can become the same as all the other pieces out there ... just what many folks here want ... a top 40 and more pop music to be a hit! ![]() |

Ironically, I found a nice clean early pressing of the McDonald & Giles album at one of my local record shops a few weeks ago. Somehow I'd never gotten around to listening to it previously - I absolutely love it. It's been in my playing rotation ever since. That said, there was no way that Mark I KC lineup could've continued and it was kind of remarkable they remained together as long as they did. I couldn't be happier with the way the band's sound continued to evolve.

Me too. All of the ‘what if’s’ are interesting to ponder, but It’s a fine album as is. I’ve heard many of the re-mixes as well, and my favorites are the 30th anniversary mixes. They sound so good at high volume and middle settings. Excellent mixes. |

I doubt that ‘lucky man’ would have been as impressive on ‘Wake’ because it would have lacked Keith Emerson’s insanely great keyboards/synths. ELP was the band for that song.
And Birdman suite is/was waaay too airy and light to be a side 2 on such an intensely menacing record as Wake. It would have needed a hard darkening from Fripp and a bit more variety via a mellotron or something. It is a great work in its own right but way too soft and gentle for “In the wake of Poseidon. Personally I hear very little early 70’s KC in it at all. Incredible string band kinda thing maybe? And Groon I always considered an average sounding B-side (as it is) and two steps away from being “filler” material. Edited by Valdez - 21 hours 58 minutes ago at 14:28 |

The classification of McDonald & Giles as 'crossover prog' is mind-numbingly stupid.
The delineations between sub-genres of prog (as set down in stone here at PA) are confusing...and doesn't take into account that bands who are around for 10-20+ years evolve their sound beyond the limits of whatever sub-genre they were originally classified in. King Crimson are a great example of this. Not every Crim album is 'eclectic prog'. |

I wasn't planning to post at PA anymore (family issues primarily), negativity and crassness can get me down, but as an early member of the Eclectic team and part of the art rock family I find this comment comes off as both disrespectful to hard-working volunteers (perhaps you mould like to volunteer your time helping the site) and perhaps lacking sufficient perspective and value. It's not the most effective, considerate or helpful way to go about changes if one wishes to see changes. Originally PA had an art rock category, I actually miss having one, but it was split into other categories such as Crossover Prog and Eclectic Prog and there was Heavy Prog. The acts were moved into the new categories and a huge number were looked at by a small number of people. Also various one in Prog Related got moved, and... Anyway, a huge amount of voluntary work has gone into this site and sometimes ideal fit aor best fit has not been achieved. Also, it was not as easy to access listening materials commonly before. I think the volunteers generally did the best they could given what was available, differences of opinion, and their limited time. But the site can always be improved and all members can help out with that. Ideally, this site would support tagging albums with genres (multiple genres and music descriptions per album), but it is a sad limitation of this site that whole discographies must be placed in one category. It is not an exact science and one can present arguments to have an act moved form one category to another. It's not set down in stone, one can suggest changes, offer re-writes of descriptions and request the movement of bands from one category to another. That said, various changes do become harder because one would need M@X's involvement -- like I don't think we could just re-rite and submit the category re-writes/edits. I do think that the genre descriptions could be very much improved, but I do think I would need M@X's involvement to change that. It is not something I would want to do now, but I have wanted to do that. For Eclectic Prog, again since we have to place whole discographies under one category, it's not meant to just be about if an individual album is Eclectic (that can be what it's about) but based on the Eclecticism across the discography (and it was particularly made for ones considered to be Art Rock). I would say that Eclectic Prog fits King Crimson best for its discography because I do think it has the qualities of more than one PA category without strongly leaning to one of them as a core value. It is eclectic, and Art Rock (one might say that Prog commonly is eclectic by nature as it draws in and on from different styles, but band in Electic ideally should have the qualities of various PA categories in its discography without overmuch leaning towards any of them) As for Giles and Fripp, I'm not that familiar with it but I had thought it had a mainstream influence of pop (psych pop) and funk. Often Crossover Prog albums are quite Eclectic Prog with some more mainstream qualities. There isn't a firm line between the two often. Avant Prog too often overlaps with what is in Eclectic Prog... Nomenclature is the bane of the archivist. Some have complained about our made-up categories like Eclectic and Crossover, but I find they have their utility particularly given this site's limitations when it comes to its existing architecture. It's not ideal. Of course lots of bands are not static, and change, and it is a sad limitation to many that we don't tag by the album, and multitag at that. I do much, much prefer the genre tagging results at Rate Your Music to PA (as well as its easy ability to search for albums based on multiple terms -- much more robust search engine). I suggest that if you wish to see changes, consider posting one or more compelling, well-argued and courteous topics in Help us improve the site. I suggest avoiding words like stupid as it does not help with a compelling argument. And a little courtesy can go a long way, as can a willingness to put in plenty of effort oneself. All are welcome to contribute and try to make this site better. Becoming a collaborator with the teams is one big way to help, but it does help to be a respectful and considerate team player. And if one is seen as unpleasant then one might well be passed on (we need people that can be trusted and can work pretty well with others). |

@Logan - my comment wasn't intended as any criticism of a particular person or persons, but in re-reading I can see how it could be interpreted that way. Tone is not something that can be conveyed via typed text or email....and not being able to hear someone's voice when they say something out loud versus reading it in a forum is not the same experience.
I've been here on PA 18 years and during that time I admit I have become more jaded within the context of prog discussions here. This has its roots in many things. To some here, being born & raised in the US means that person couldn't possibly have a valuable opinion on music, prog or otherwise. Others may judge people's opinions by how old they are. Still others may have issues with you because, in addition to the above items, one is an artist here on PA as well (such as in my case). Point is...there's a underlying culture of negativity that I think has seeped into a few long-timers like myself. Like you're just waiting for someone to take a jab at you. |

I appreciate you Logan! Not so long ago when I was having a bad day I stepped out of line with someone I didn’t even know (you). I kick myself in the ass to this day for being so rude and selfish. To be honest this site is fine. The genres are fine, the mods are fine, the intelligence is through the roof… many times its just US that could use a little fine tuning … I speak for myself, perhaps maybe for others . We know who we are. Opinions about music can get contentious, we are all aware of that. Like political discussions we can scream and shout until we are blue in the face, but in the final analysis it’s all just a cool breeze over a hot turd… (Hey. That gives me an idea for a song!).

^ Thanks, Valdez. I've forgotten any negative interaction with you. We all, or most of us, I certainly do, have bad days. I accept that we are not always presenting ourselves at our best. Stresses creep in, it can be easy to misinterpret people and presume ill intent. I appreciate you, and very much appreciate your post. One thing I don't generally believe in is bearing grudges, not keeping an axe to grind, but for someone as forgetful as I have become, not bearing grudges comes naturally.
![]() ^^ And thanks for taking the time to explain, Disconnect. Reading tone can be tough online. I've made silly jokes that people were offended by, but I know had I been with them in person they would have seen the twinkle in my eye and wry, maybe somewhat naughty, smile. I've been told that it's one of my endearing qualities, at least by my wife. It's so easy to cause offence where none is intended, and the best intentions can be totally misconstrued/ misunderstood. And it is so much easier to get to know people in person as we all have our idiosyncrasies (body language is important). I really grok/get the feeling that someone is going to take a jab at you, even for might seem to oneself the most innocuous of comments. I've had a couple of people who I felt would pounce on any comment by me that they didn't like as they perceived it in some ill way. Maybe because they bore grudges over some perceived sleight. I'm a great believer in trying to talk things out, trying to explain one's perspective, really actively listen to each other, try to work it out and then let things be water under the bridge but some are much more reluctant to that process than others and might just respond back in a consistently snarky way. I think one just has to accept that and try to ignore such people, and if they persist, as them to stop communicating. And if that does not work, as for a mod to step in. This forum does not always feel like a safe place, mind you, little danger can be invigorating. Speaking of requesting a moderator, I sometimes wondered if because I mas a moderator and I have been since I think 2009 that people felt like I would have a thicker skin than I do and it was more okay to criticise me. Of course many people don't like being told what is expected or chastised (I don't enjoy being told that myself, or doing it, and I dislike officious people generally). It's not easy trying to consider what one think is expected of one as a mod and trying to please various people. Sometimes people would get angry an condescending when you take action while others would get get that way with inaction. You can't please everybody. I do hope people realise the stress that situation can put the mods in (it's not easy for someone like me who does have social anxiety and clinical depression, but if people meet this introvert, I appear gregarious. It exhausts me, however). And I, like many others, are often multitasking, so our minds might not be fully on what's going on at the forum. Anyway, good for us to be forgiving and tolerant, within reason. i would like this forum to be less negative and generally a warm, caring and inviting place, and perhaps a little drama now and then to spice things up. ![]() One thing that's important to remember, I think, is we can all have have bad days, that we all have feelings, and that most of us have people who care about us and rely on us in our personal lives. Being seemingly kind or unkind has ripple effects. I try to be mindful of that. Minimising suffering and maximising well-being is easier said than done, but a little kindness, a little empathy can go a very long way. |

Well said Logan, and I get it 100%. BTW I know a few people who think ‘Groon’ is the best thing King Crimsons ever done… I don’t argue the point, but ….
In closing…. Have fun with it!!! |
