In your Area, it's The Trip of a lunchtime around the wonderworld of Italian Prog, where I'll be featuring the "Big 3" and 22 more of our Prog Italia favourites over the coming months and years ahead, and that's just for starters. You can take that to the Banco!

A-Z of Italian Prog
ANTONIUS REX Tempus fugit and it's ab initio with the first artist on the A-Z playlist in this ad hoc Italian Prog blog. Antonius Rex is e pluribus unum in the magnus Italian progosphere which seemingly goes on ad finitum. You can listen to these albums ad libitum though as they're here in aeternum. Antonius Rex is led by the charismatic figure of Antonio Bartoccetti, who is primus inter pares in the world of Italian Prog. He is to Italian music what Bernardo Bertolucci is to the world of Italian film. Bartoccetti is also the man behind the haunted house of horrors that is Jacula - some of the freakiest, scariest music you may have heard since Mike Oldfield's dark, eerie theme to The Exorcist or John Carpenter's creepy film score for Halloween. The first Antonius Rex album Neque Semper Ardum Tendus Rex is ne plus ultra and was originally intended for release in 1974, but its devilish, satanic theme was too outrageous even for their record company (Vertigo) and the album wouldn't see general release until nearly thirty years later in 2002. They say the devil has all the best tunes though and it's diabolical that the magnum opus works of Antonius Rex and Jacula aren't better known outside of their native Italy, but sic vita est, as they say in Rome. And with that said, carpe diem! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - August 21 2025 at 07:50 |

BANCO DEL MUTUO SOCCORSO (The Bank of Mutual Trust) Sounding like a Sicilian bank where they make you an offer of a loan you can't refuse, Banco are one of the "Big 3" of Italian Prog. With their dual keyboards, dramatic instrumental flourishes and poetic lyrics in combination with powerful operatic vocals, Banco del Mutuo Soccorso are one of the finest Italian progressive rock bands ever - and you can take that to the Banco! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - August 18 2025 at 04:05 |

CALLIOPE She's the Greek Muse of epic poetry, or even a steam organ on wheels, but is there any hope that anyone outside of Italy has ever heard of the fantastico RPI band Calliope? Is the Pope Catholic? Of course you have! But have you heard any of their albums? If not, check out Calliope's magnifico debut: "La Terra dei Grandi Occhi" (The Land of Grand Eyes). It's a real eye-opener and more popular in Italy than Pope on a Rope, probably. By the way, I'm not au fait with the Italian language, but I'll take a wild guess that the title of Calliope's second album: "Citta di Frontera", means City on the Frontier and Calliope's fourth and final album: "Generazioni" is one for your children's children's children to treasure. ![]() ![]() 1993: Calliope - Citta di Frontiera - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_nMbrG9vYmn38ulDpVjwpX7gR_0VHiIpho 1995: Calliope - Il Madrigale del Vento - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dov-WXlpuJA 2002: Calliope - Generazioni - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eNye44fzUzs Note: Italian words in the intro are in Italics ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - August 19 2025 at 05:55 |

DEVIL DOLL A band so magnificently creepy, they make Comus and Dead Can Dance appear mainstream. Devil Doll are a menacing, neo-gothic Italo-Slovenian outfit led by a mysterious Italian figure who goes by the enigmatic name of "Mr Doctor". Doctor Who? He's a specialist in the dark art of sprechgesang (look it up), with his spine-chilling cabaret act sounding like an imaginary nightmarish film score to a silent horror movie, being in the same ghoulish bloody vein as Antonius Rex and Jacula. And you thought Nosferatu and The Cabinet of Dr Caligari were scary?? You ain't heard nothing yet! Don't have nightmares. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

EZRA WINSTON A favoloso Symphonic Prog band from the Lazio region of Italy who only stuck around just long enough to record two magnificent masterpieces, but these are the things of which myths and legends are made. Lazio is of course famous for having once had one Paul (no more tears) Gascoigne (or Gazza) in its soccer team. You'll be shedding tears of joy though (hopefully) when you hear Ezra Winston's two magnifico albums, and in a surprising twist of fate, Ezra Winston returned with a third album over thirty years later, ironically titled, "Tertium Non Datur", which means "There is no third possibility." ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - August 21 2025 at 01:21 |

FORMULA 3 A full-throttle Italian power trio who were all revved up and raring to go in the early 1970's, completing four laps of the circuit before the chequered flag came down in 1974. Having had an 18-year pit stop, Formula 3 reunited for four more laps around the racetrack in the early 1990's with King Kong (1991) being a monster of a comeback album. The Formula 3 racing circle consisted of Alberto Radius on guitar & vocals , Gabriele Lorenzi on keyboards & bass and Tony Cicco on drums. Lorenzi has since retired from the music business and now runs a restaurant in Livorno, being Italy's answer to Gordon Ramsay, only without the titanic tantrums and bad language. ![]() ![]() 1971: Formula 3 - Formula 3 - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLD9WLinkyEmgdzt_feL_RmT--m7NneoIL 1972: Formula 3 - Sognando e Risognando - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ytp1ycu27vI 1973: Formula 3 - La Grande Casa - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_kJB8CL4OD2IrsQ9ISfXFi30dIeVhRX-50 1991: Formula 3 - King Kong 1994: Formula 3 - La Casa Dell'Imperatore - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_k_3tHwcdsDMjaXwMytCBezanmepeY0J6A 1996: Formula 3 - I Successi di Lucio Battisti - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_nO_8j9otWxpQW_KxKVMd1knT2QHiUDnQA 2004: Formula 3 - Il Nostro Caro... GOBLIN In the same way as a goblin is a grotesque, monstrous creature, the creepy Italian band Goblin specialise in grotesque, monstrous music for particularly grisly horror films, the vast majority of their work being in that same bloody vein. In fact, the eerie, nightmarish music of Goblin on its own is enough to freak anyone out - without even seeing the accompanying film - the group having worked with Italian master of gory horror Dario Argento, as well as killer zombie specialist George A. Romero. And you thought Bernard Herrmann's soundtrack to Psycho was scary. B...b...baby, you ain't heard nothing yet! Goblin are not for the faint-hearted or for those of a nervous disposition, so it's probably best not to leave a Goblin album in your great aunt Edna's Christmas stocking. Fans of cosy Walt Disney family movies are well-advised to give the spooky music of Goblin a wide berth. All in all then, Goblin are a devilishly good band for those who thought The Exorcist was a comedy. ![]() ![]() 1976: Goblin - Roller - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_nK_K7sseLk7Jvuqmc5fBDDGIfsWhZVC14 1976: Goblin - Perche Si Uccidono - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLFZ5kTZU6FldDkvvS2_We-Iqub1awe41b 1977: Goblin - Suspiria - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_mmZiSYHNrjMUgg3nRVgvnEB8ncgTTwMJw 1978: Goblin - Il Fantastico Viaggio del Bagarozzo Mark - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLo9Nu4A4dlz1AopDfADIqH2hFPAMwy-PR 1978: Goblin - Zombi: Dawn of the Dead - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_nIysjcU6ZheqQ5em5_bQyRXutyOTldJTU 1979: Goblin - Amo Non Amo - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_k0kB8pvvJ2H2lIIyDt7-bYS4dZPQcOOPU 1979: Goblin - Squadra Antigangsters - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLvMViVt_1wWpJm0F9sajm34cX5yLhbPxJ 1979: Goblin - Patrick - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL4d1fcPKUHLouvZip43H73n_W0rSrhOgt 1980: Goblin - Contamination - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLIHOiEnCEbc5qjZ5FDzWHxP4AqFDTCNIp 1982: Goblin - Volo - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WOfD__u3gDE 1982: Goblin - Tenebrae - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_kIgjTYmeEHYKab6Ypk7NS9VaubfKPSCEo 1983: Goblin - Notturno - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_naZl8hPxQEcjv9gx8TaRc46FrvLzexRRU 1985: Goblin - Phenomena - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dXlPyet8GAA 1989: Goblin - La Chiesa - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_kMKvHEiF1iA1lhq3xEsNPPFAtgLhdHUPk 1997: Goblin - Buio Omega - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_kQqC5U4cY2nEW-v9drkcXNMC0qimaT0pA 1999: Goblin - La Via Della Droga - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_nhZ-i-4I25t-5yTLP7TQWu8QY_N8OBGvo 2001: Goblin - Non Ho Sonno - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vGLJ1QyLcak 2006: Goblin - Back to the Goblin 2005 - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_nltDqQavCmOcK_gtPNDD7WX1hwSrGKWaI 2014: Claudio Simonetti's Goblin - The Murder Collection - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_mhlmpuXGY08yetks-2yEsB_tcO5zyyNeg 2015: Goblin - Four of a Kind - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_kcSO8Cb3hf9a8OUK5sO2YOnlFOCKm39Q0 2016: Goblin - Austinato: Live in Texas - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_m7SCOI3I_jbXJ2v-m2m47C4fQHs5dNZ-c 2016: Goblin - Live 1978 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kore2NGDtR0 2018: Goblin - Fearless (37513 Zombie Ave.) - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLOpPe1J9AA34poJxCLJcahqvFd4lmQUEf 2019: Claudio Simonetti's Goblin - The Devil is Back - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_mGl4vNDQ6M5oZeHFws5R9zDS3erD5Cc0I 2022: Goblin - Wampyr - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLM3G0aTEFKMFIVycnegm3x5tembk0h8lo Edited by Psychedelic Paul - 6 hours 32 minutes ago at 23:37 |

HOMUNCULUS RES Buongiorno! Canterbury Scene music, Sicilian style! Homunculus Res doesn't translate well into English, but if you can even spell this band's name from memory, then you'll be glad you studied Latin at school. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - 17 hours 18 minutes ago at 12:51 |

^ Thanks for the update. I'll blame the gremlins for those missing albums on my Goblin playlist.
