Topic: Preferred Porcupine Tree Drummer Posted: July 29 2009 at 08:13 |
Maybe this is a somewhat pointless poll as I'm pretty sure I know who everyone's going to pick! But I think there's a lot to say for Maitland! Harrison is the only person who could have replaced Maitland and that's a fact! I often wonder how In Absentia, Deadwing and FoaBP would sound with Chris on kit. Alas, I guess I will never know.
I encourage conversation on this poll too so give your opinion on the two amazing drummers if you wouldn't mind!

Sorry for double-posting but I am absolutely disgusted by my spamming of exclamation marks, please ignore my poor grammar.

Ah, the return of the CM vs. GH poll!
GH is sure to win, but CM has many admirers as well.

I loved CM's drumming to the earlier albums.
But GH wins.

Because GH is CM, I'll give Maitland my vote.
They are both good, but GH is a beast

Both outstanding drummers. GH really was the right choice to fill CM's shoes. This is a really tough choice and the winner is......um.....er....hmm......Doh! Gavin I guess. But only because I saw him live and he was gracious enough to put on a drum clinic while he was here in Australia.
Gee I love Chris's work though.

Although I prefer the albums PT did with Chris, I like Harrison's drumming better...

Right now I'm in love with the drumming on Lightbulb Sun, so my vote goes to CM.

I agree completely with the "Lightbulb Sun" assessment, Maitland has a great style especially noticeable on this one. In my particular favorite, "Last Chance to Evacuate . . . " I think Chris spends the last three minutes of the song doing a long and drawn out drum fill. Every other one of his convulsions wraps so beautifully around the beat, yet he seems to never repeat the same sequence of hits. With that being said, I think Gavin Harrison has a similar and improved style. Gavin is kind of the next generation, some of the work that he did in the "Arriving Somewhere" is phenominal. I wish I remember which song it was, but there was an absolutely amazing lead in that he did that made me stop the DVD, rewind it and point it out to my wife with the comment "That was sick". Both are great drummers.

This poll really isn't a contest. Harrison is so much better, it's not even fair.

Yeah I figured GH would win easily, but I was hoping for more discussion on the two master drummers!

Maitland is good but he isn't in the same league as Harrison, who I think is one of the best drummers in modern music riight now.
