Two albums that dedicate equal parts to each of their members to do whatever they want by themselves, plus another part for the whole band (in Floyd's case, the live album). Which one do you prefer?
Edit. I wasn't specific enough at first, so I edited the poll choices to make it clear I was writing about Floyd's Ummagumma and ELP's Works Vol 1. Edited by Dellinger - August 17 2017 at 21:02 |

Ummagumma. Beyond those two it's Romantic Warrior for me.

Had to vote for Works here. But it was more a vote with my heart than actually thinking that they're better albums. You've.. you've set this up for ELP to lose here man lol.

I like Works and despise Ummagumma, so there's that.

Ummagumma is my favorite Pink Floyd album, so that is my vote.

Similarity? Yes. Contest? No.
Ummagumma (my second favourite PF album).

Neither are great IMO. It's about even. Works is marginally more listenable.

I thought it was PF's album Works. (The compilation with The Embryo on it...)
It's supposed to be versus ELP's Works is it? I like the live album and some parts of the studio Ummgumma, don't dislike anything but not likely to play Grand Vizier... and that whole thing needed a band work out. ELP - great Piano Concerto, easily the best composition off the two albums, nice tracks from the band (would have made a terrific single LP). Not keen on Lake and Sinfield's under written yet over produced ballads. Zzzz. Palmer's side is fun with a few more serious moments (Enemy God). He did better than Nick but then again did not have Rog telling him how to go about what he must do. Poor beggar - "only play drums... nowt else..." So group and some solo parts of Works and Ummagumma without really disliking anything. |

Both are quite excellent in my book. For quite personal reasons, I'll vote for Works.

Ummagumma is essential, Works is disposable (at least once you have lots of Floyd albums).
I'm surprised at how close this is, it was tied when I looked earlier -- I should stop being surprised here, as I know my predictive capabilities at this site are not good, expect for a few individuals. In my experience, the one time I remember being in conversation about Works, it was regarded lowly. I know many people don;t like Ummagumma, but still. Heck, Works has a 2.19 rating at this site with 135 ratings. Ummagumma on the other hand has a 3.48 with 1495 ratings. That's a huge difference in numbers of ratings, and a very significant difference in how it's rated. Anyway, Works was the first Pink Floyd album I bought. I loved the compilation album, but as I got more of their albums it wasn't really a very important album to have in my collection. Ummagumma, on the other hand, I do consider to be essential. It's my second favourite Pink Floyd studio album --- Atom Heart Mother is my favourite. We are talking the same Works, right, the album from the early 80s? I didn't think it was even well enough known that we would get this many people voting in this poll in just nine hours (assuming people would not vote without knowing both albums, which I know is not true of some). Although the poll setter did not specify, I assume its Works Vol. 1 (released in 1977) we are talking about. Who cares about the ratings - individual sides trump those of Floyd easily and 'Fanfare' and 'Pirates' are pure prog joy. I like the Ummagumma live sides but not enough to overcome the ELP's last, great album.

Oh, ELP's Works Volume One vs Pink Floyds Ummagumma -- that didn't even occur to me. I assumed this was Pink Floyd's Works vs. Pink Floyd's Ummagumma but I knew that didn't make sense with what was written in the post, which is why I asked. Haven't listened to PinK Foyd's Works in decades Nor would it make much sense putting that 1983 compilation album up against a studio album.
I didn't actually vote, since I was unsure, which is good cause I have not heard the ELP album. |
