He's pretty solid, sounds like just based upon the music I checkes out on the site....the vocals drive me away, though...

Dickyroberts:

He's okay, but nothing like Portnoy.  If you want to hear an extremely amazing, underappreciated drummer, check out John Macaluso who plays with ARK.  Their album "Burn the Sun" has some of the best prog-metal drumming I've ever heard.

Peace.

Nick Mason from Pink Floyd was an early great in prog drumming. His work on "Echoes" is brilliant! Long live Mason!

I agree about Carl.  and I think after that last drum clinic Carl did with Danny Carey... that Carl Palmer is Danny's favorite drummer too.  Danny said to me..after hearing Carl say he had a coffee addiction... "if I get a coffee addiction do you think I could play that fast"...  I said "No".

Danny liked Carl so much.... he hugged him..  Carl said we make our drummers really big in this country...

There´s lots of good prog drummers, but my favourite is Carl Palmer. His drumming was stunning. He was so good with drums as Keith was good with keyboards.

Cozy could be a great prog drummer as he proved on 'Gates Of Babylon' and 'Stargazer' although I don't rate what he did on the ELPowell album as highly.I tend to rate Neil Peart as the best -he can play agressively but with a lot of 'feel' as well.Carl Palmer is a close second.

Well,I don't want to say nothing against Nick Mason because I love Pink Floyd

and Mason's gentle drumming is always very nice to hear but I think that he

is not really an outstanding drummer.Like I am a drummer too my choice is

definitely Carl Palmer. His power and precission makes me fly.

I'm not a great Pink Floyd fan but I got the Pompeii DVD recently and Nick Mason's drumming on that impresses me.I also like what he did on tracks like 'Sheep' and most of the Wall album. The guy is a decent player.Would there have been anyone better to occupy the drum stool in PF?

I also enjoyed Nick's drumming on the Pompeii video... and the DSOTM video... but on the last couple of PF tours (the post- Waters tours).. there was a second drummer.  I don't know if this was just for additional sounds or if Nick wasn't up to par...

But it does seem to be a trend for the older drummers.. I saw the Moody Blues last year.. and there was also a second drummer who was definitely doing a lot more of the work than Graeme Edge was doing...

Now Carl Palmer... could blow all the youngins off the stage.. I don't think he'll be slowing down anytime soon... He still plays to kill... and will prove it to you!

I saw Carl Palmer recently. He has regained much of the fluidity in his playing and has few peers if any. There are two 'young uns' I rate though: Zoltan Csorz (Flower Kings) and Dominic Howard (Muse). Both would give Carl a run for his money I reckon.

See the thing is about Carl tho Richard... you saw him in concert recently.. and basically playing the same songs he's been playing for years. As you recall, I saw him several times late last year in concert also.. playing the same stuff I'm sure.  And even tho it was spectacular as far as concert playing... You should of seen him in the clinics....

I don't know, maybe it was his need to show off, or his extreme competitive streak (which he will admit to), but during the solos (he did 2) on both nights of that clinic... he blew the stage away.  And all those kids who came to see Danny Carey.. left saying "Who the hell is Danny Carey"  cause Carl blew him off the stage.  I know I've said this before, but even Danny couldnt play next to him afterwards... he was so awed... and told us so.

I think that was the most interesting point of the clinic.. the fact that 2 great drummers were there.. and the competitive nature of Carl just eclipsed the whole event... and all those kids that really didn't know Carl Palmer.. came away with such a new found respect... including Danny!  I know I've watched Carl play for over 30 years.. and on that second night... his second solo had me on the ground and my respect for his abilities practically doubled...

And he still has the best butt in the business...   (When I take a backstage shot, I really take a backstage shot...hehehe)

It always amazes me that few people mention Neil Peart in this type of thread (what is this the 4th time drummers are debated?). Portnoy groomed himself after Peart. No one has more technical prowess. Peart has recorded in many other genres to high acclaim. Once again, the combination of creativity, innovation, and technical prowess is the basis for my pick...not just technical ability alone.

To each his own...

Cozy Powell was, IMO, a solid rock/metal drummer who suited the likes of Rainbow and Whitesnake. I dont know what Emmerson & Lake were doing with him. The album he made with them was terrible, IMHO. He is the wrong type of drummer for that sort of music.

I was never a big fan of ELP, but Carl Palmer was a brilliant drummer and was integral part of the ELP sound. Just as Bonham was for Zep, Collins for Genesis and Peart for Rush.

Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

I agree 100%. I cant think of a better drummer than Peart. In some respects none even come close. He is the most technically proficient drummer I have ever heard and has on many occassions blown away accusations of being metronomic and playing without feeling.

He proved he was capable of jazz back in 1978 with some of the passages on La Villa Strangiato, and more recently with his work on the 'Burning for buddy' tributes. I think in prog circles people tend to overlook Peart a lot, because Rush are not always regarded as prog, which in itself is not an unfair appraisal of them.

I've got tickets to see them in September, and I cant wait!!!!
