For the purposes of this series of polls I'm taking the generally accepted 'Big Six' of prog (whatever our reservations about it), and defining the 'classic era' as being from 1967 to 1979.

Hopefully all official band members (as opposed to hired hands) who appeared on at least one studio album will be included.

So, for the final poll in this series, who is your favourite lead guitarist?

Steve Howe was untouchable in the 70's. He was at least 15 years ahead in regards to his playing technique. Many shredders borrow from his influence without ever, ever realizing it! Guy was shredding 16th note passages like he was auditioning for Death while Chuck Schuldiner was still crawling around!

Today it's Fripp just slightly ahead of Barrett. Then Gilmour and Barre.

I do appreciate both Steves and Mick Abrahams as well. Not familiar with earliest Genesis and Yes.

No, because his primary functions was as bassist and singer, and the fact that lead guitar was never a main feature of ELP's stuff.

DG for me of course, closely followed by Howe / Hackett.

Indeed and many of them were perfect for their own band's sound... could you imagine Gilmour in Yes, or Fripp in Pink Floyd, or Hackett in Jethro Tull?

David Gilmour - with 8 out of 9 five-star solo albums, who could ask for More, although Hackett can really hack it too, but how about Howe. Thumbs Up

Some of my favourite moments from some of these guitarists comes from outside the bands they are best known for. My absolute favourite example of Steve Howe’s guitar playing is his contribution to Queen’s Innuendo. My most favourite examples of Robert Fripp’s guitar playing are from his contributions to Bowie albums.

As much as I love the tone of Gilmour’s guitar, he’s a bit of a one trick pony. I can understand why he is leading (at the moment), but for me you can’t beat Robert Fripp. Whether it’s with King Crimson, Peter Gabriel, Brian Eno, or anyone else, he brings something very special to the table.

I'm going to vote on Steve Hackett. But, I also love all the others in their own way.

Got to be Hackett for me, the master of various styles and (probably) the inventor of tapping.
I'm a fan of Howe but there are times when the rest of the band should have told him to rein it in a bit (Going For The One, Turn of the Century, The Ancient).
