Help With Getting A Friend Into Prog

Ok, I recently lent my friend my copy of Genesis' The Lamb, which he told me he loved. I am looking for any other recommendations for CDs to get him, as it is near Christmas and I figure prog would make a good gift.

 

King Crimson "In the Court of the Crimson King"

ELP "Emerson Lake & Palmer" (debut album)

Renaissance "Ashes are Burning"

There are a few good ones.

If he likes The Lamb, Get him Foxtrot. I think Yes is a great gateway into
Prog rock as well. Any album would do.

Without a doubt: Camel - Mirage or Moonmadness... King Crimson - Red or ITCOTCK, ITWOP or Lizard.... Jethro Tull - TAAB..... Yes - Close to the Edge ... Kansas - Song for America... Rush - A Farewell to Kings... and finally : Genesis - Nursery Cryme or Selling England ... those are the two with the best atmospheres.

You can not go wrong with these !!

Just a tip, if you tell the people of progarchives.com what your friend already listens to, we can move from there. For example if you've got a friend that listens to classic rock, you will want to buy American prog-sounding albums (Kansas, Styx maybe?) and obviously if your friend listens to techno, perhaps Krautrock or prog-electronic. There's different prog albums made for every type of listener, even those who don't listen to rock at all (see Jazz Fusion). Someone who listens to jazz every may not enjoy Kansas quit like he/she does Mahavishnu Orchestra. Goodluck anyways.

I already brought one of my friends into prog. I forced him to listen to Genesis until he liked it.

You should do that too.

Well, he'll listen to just about anything 'retro'. He hates the music scene today with all the soundalike and corporate rock bands. The only current band I know he likes is Green Day.

I do catch him listening to a lot of 80's stuff, so I suppose Marillion would be a good choice as well, maybe the first album? (Script)
