People always talk about "THE 5 GREATEST PROG BANDS IN THE WHOLE WORLD". Well, who are they? Are there really 5? Sometimes people claim that their are more or less. Oh, and don't number em and tell me how one of them's number one. Just tell me who the 5 greats are. P.S. Do you like my signature? Edited by luckyman_123 |

I've read the big 5 or big 6 used very frequently in different forums to describe the same bands: Big 5: King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Yes, Genesis and ELP Big 6: The big 5 plus Jethro Tull. But it's bery subjective. Iván BTW: Great signature Edited by ivan_2068 |

THIS IS THE KIND OF TOPIC THAT EVERYBODY IS GONNA DISAGREE .FOR ME ARE CAMEL,YES,KING CRIMSON,ELP,AND GENESIS.BUT IS ABSURD COS PINK FLOYD SHOULD BE THERE,AND OTHER PEOPLE CHANGE ONE BAND FOR THE OTHER AND PUT 5 DIFERENTS ONES AND AFTER ALL WHO WOULD IN THE RIGHT MIND COME WITH A LIST OF PERFECT 5 AND NO ONE COMPLAIT ABOUT IT ?... BY THE WAY YOU SIGNATURE IS REALLY FUNNY

Just as long as ELP don't feature on that list, I'm happy!

Forgot Van Der Graff Generator.. The Big 5 is usually: VDGG, Yes, Genesis, King Crimson and Gentle Giant...(though my fave prog-rock does not include these 5 bands... I do like KC and some VDGG) Cyndee Edited by ViolinCyndee |

One moment please, I'm not saying I agree with this list, because IMO Anglagard should be there, but this is what normally people refer as the big 5 or 6 duetoi the fact that those are the 5 or 6 more popular bands of the genre. Iván |

the big 5 or 6 are usually named on the biggest, most popular, or those bands that non-prog fans would associate with prog. IMO the top 6 are sort of no-brainers..... everyone else is a cut below on that scale. Yes, King Crimson, ELP, Floyd, Genesis, Tull |

What's wrong with ELP? Your sig captivates me... What is it of? It looks like and album cover... I feel very intruiged... And BTW, I do not like luckman's sig, it seems... disrespectable. Edited by tremulant |

At first it looks as a bit predictable contest but it's funny to notice that there is still so much discussion , progheads do have a strong opinion about their personal taste! These are my favorite five 'symphonic rock dinosaurs': Genesis + ELP + King Crimson + Yes + Pink Floyd To add a special flavor to this thread here are my 5 favorite 'non symphonic rock dinosaur' progrock bands: Barclay James Harvest + Camel + Gentle Giant + Manfred Mann's Earth Band + Kansas And here are my favorite five 'less known' progrock bands: Triana + Solaris + Le Orme + Triumvirat + Anekdoten About your signature, it gives a funny touch to the quite morbid painting by HR Giger ! |

I don't know exactly, but Pink Floyd is certainly in the first place.

These are the one's that even non prog fans are generally familiar with and are most people's introduction to the genre. |

Big Five? To me, Gentle Giant is so giantly big that there's no place
for four other bands within the first five. From there on there are of
course others, too.

For me the Big Five are: Yes Pink Floyd King Crimson Genesis ELP
I would recommend these five bands to any person who doesn't know anything about prog rock, as they are the quintaessential prog bands. But I have to say I prefer Gentle Giant and Jethro Tull over ELP. Edited by eddietrooper |
