I had into a debate with a friend over this once, and I wanted to see what evryone else thought.

Which is, when using the definition provided on this site, more "Prog", Pink Floyd or Yes?  My friend said it was the former, while I said the Latter.  What do you think?

Which era of Floyd and which era of Yes?
When 900 years you reach, look as good, you will not.

Good question.
I say Yes.... because... Floyd did take the music in a whole new direction, but Yes seem more experimental to me.

I think Pink Floyd's music is easier for the masses to accept and most of their stuff is in 4/4 time, no really intense meters. Therefore, IMHO, less proggy. PF is Art Rock/Space Rock (at times) and Yes is more symphonic. You can't, or in Jim Garten's case, shouldn't, dance to Yes. 90125 not included, of course.

I, for one, own most of the studio releases from both and I highly enjoy them. I hear more Pink Floyd, but I listen to more Yes.

Well, my friend was mainly using dark side and the wall in his argument, but I thought of it as both bands on a whole.

"Classic" Yes are the band one would put forward as "The Champions" to represent Progressive Rock in a "who most defines your genre" pissing up the wall contest.

Neither - they're both so different, it's like comparing two things which are different...

...What does "more prog" mean?

pink floyd had a much more consistent career. piper to the wall was pretty much flawless then they got crap as the band fell apart.

yes lineup fell apart practically every year and they only squeezed out a few masterpieces from the yes album to relayer. they had too many crap albums and were inconsistant.

Well since Floyd and Yes can't really be compared to other musically... you must be talking about a fistfight... Then its 4 against 5, unless we include Clare Torry since we're talkin DSOTM times here...

I think Clare could take down Jon Anderson in less than 10 seconds, David G could wipe the floor with Steve Howe and possibley have him for dinner; Rick Wright would probably get creamed by Rick Wakeman... Both Roger and Chris during that time were tall and lanky, but Roger was so cranky, I'd have to give him the advantage....and Nick would probably fall to Alan White, while Bill Bruford stood on the sidelines critiquing his style.'

Overall tho, I'd give it to Floyd!

Prefer Floyd but would go with Yes, they scream Prog Rock while Floyd whisper it quietly with just a hint of melancholic desperation and nihilistic despair

i think i'd prefer to see the fistfight.

When you speak, is it you that hears? Are your ears full? You can't hear anything at all.

Equall in their own way.  Yes relates more to the "definition" of prog (who's to decide what is progressive anyways?), but I think Pink go places equall to hat of Yes's style, just more layed back and containing more of a "concept"(lyrically at least).

Well Yes have certainly received far more flak for being Prog than Pink Floyd. Many evil anti-prog "beings" use "Tales From the Topographic Oceans" as an example of how "self-indulgent and pompous" Prog can be. The point about the time signatures is true too; Pink Floyd are undoubtably the best band to introduce to new Prog fans, but Yes represent, along with King Crimson, Genesis & ELP the very core of Prog. I may also invite the wrath of many people by saying this (and don't get me wrong, I LOVE Yes & Pink Floyd), but I believe that the musicianship in Yes' compositions is tighter & more accomplished, and Prog champions musical ability. Having said that, Pink Floyd are fantastic!
And Jesus said unto John, "come forth and receive eternal life..."
Unfortunately, John came fifth and was stuck with a toaster.

Er...this is a dumb thread...however, i have to say Yes are more Prog..and they are the best band in the world, so without a doubt they win , the have one of the best singers, and tremendous ...outstanding..muscians that time cannot touch as they are still as super today as they were all those many years ago...
