You can choose more than one, I opted for the John Foxx but all have good albums

Dunno none! Except for two faves, time ago, Look of Love and Poison Arrow, yay! Those were really great new wave songs, I remember.

Where's Inxs?

I tried to amalgamate keyboard driven bands with strong ties to either Roxy Music or Kraftwerk.

U2 and INXS are more guitar oriented.
BTW, if you never heard John Foxx, you are in for a BIG surprise: the first 4 albums are very futuristic, great vocals and mezmerizing synths.

Ah, a bit depressed tonight , business is very fickle , like a damn yoyo. So I unwind by musing about prog and enjoying the laughter. of my PA mates .
Duran , really ? I saw them Rio album tour , pretty good really but they veered into sillyness after, IMHO. New Religion is still a big fave, though. Sylvian live was a real blast though with Torn on guitar , pffffffLOL

I won't vote as I don't remember enough of this well-enough, but I certainly liked The Art of Noise.

Japan for me  - the only band on the list, besides Talk Talk, that are listed in PA's database. Their addition didn't go down too well, but their ties to prog are undeniable, and their music is fascinating indeed. As a runner-up, I'd choose Simple Minds, with their huge drum sound.

I agree that Duran Duran are worth mentioning. I'm not sure how serious Micky was, but I am dead serious - although poppier, I don't fin them at all that different from 80's neo-prog.

Another great band (although they veered into completely into Art-Rock in the 90's) was Tears for Fears. Heart
Bigger on the inside.

Howard Devoto's Magazine for me were one of the best live bands of the 80's, check out 'Play' their live LP for a taste of this, in the studio it didn't always come together but 'Correct Use Of Soap' is a great LP and one I still play.

Every musical movement that is big enough has to produce some good musicians who wouldn't have had the incentive to start playing without it.

Prog fans should check out Magazine's 'Secondhand Daylight'; I did a thread on them a while back and it literally died a death. Anyway, that album is terrific- there's a real brooding menace about it, with very lush and expansive keyboard work from Dave Formula. Check out the bleak 'Permafrost', the instrumental 'The Thin Air' or 'Back To Nature'. From the first album 'Real Life', try 'Motorcade' and 'Parade'. I give them my vote.

I think Simple Minds' 'Empires And Dance' and that 'Sons And Fascination...' double will appeal to prog fans as well. See those early Ultravox albums also- I have a best of and they come off like a cross between Roxy Music, Berlin-era Bowie, Cockney Rebel and Curved Air.

I have a few Japan albums; am particularly fond of 'Ghosts'. When do you ever hear a song as bizarre as that in the pop charts now? Well back then it was in the Top 5 in the UK charts!

Few keys there, though! Good choices but further away from those listed.

Well, I am a Fan! Saw them live, blew me sideways, you are very correct about that "menacing" feeling, Devoto was spectral. But being a bass fetishist I must applaud Barry Adamson who had this BIG sound,  a cross between Squire and Karn (especially Back to Nature, a stunning piece) . Clap

However i notice the biggest name DEPECHE MODE is missing. i don't like their beginnings, but from BLACK CELEBRATION to SONGS OF FAITH AND DEVOTION, they were unbeatable.Thumbs%20Up
