Yes, I am indeed 14 years old, and I have, over the last few months of lurking on this website, become deeply obsessed with Prog, in all shapes and sizes. After a year of putting up with current popular music, which I can't stand in the slightest, I decided to look for music separate from the norm. At first I tried some classic rock, exposing me to Led Zeppelin. I managed to scrounge a few of their more popular songs from my parents library, however those wouldn't quite quench my thirst. So, like any other 14 year old with a computer would do, I looked to iTunes. To my shock, the online music giant possessed nothing but COVERS! Very discouraged, I reluctantly flipped through a few and found a cover of my favorite Zeppelin tune, Achilles Last Stand. I had never heard of the band, Dream Theater, but I really liked how they combined all of my favorite songs all in one, so I bought it. This track off of A Change of Seasons became the first piece of progressive rock I ever owned. I became quite hooked on the track and purchased a few original Dream Theater songs. After I wore out These Walls and Pull Me Under, I started collecting complete albums. First Octavarium, Then Train of Thought, and so on, until I owned almost their whole discography. I found myself not listening to anything other than Dream Theater, and decided it was time for something new. I quickly found this website and now, about a year later, own a feeble collection of around 60 prog albums. My library could be considered a bare-minimum prog starer kit, containing the PA Top 10, along with various other albums of popular prog bands, (King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Genesis, Yes, etc.) I will continue to expose myself to as much of this wonderful music as my wallet will allow me, and hopefully build myself a respectable collection.

Awesome!
I'm 15

I've been listening to prog since I was about five, thanks to my dad, but became Addicted in 2003, when my Dad and I went to see YES: Live at the montreux jazz festival in sydney.

I was brought up on GENESIS, YES, ASIA and E.L.P Predominantly, but since, I've stemmed out quite a bit, finding Marillion, Dream Theater, Maudlin Of The Well, Porcupine Tree, Opeth, RADIOHEAD and many more.

Its good to hear some other young people listening to prog!
I'm finding more people around my age here on PA every day aswell

Thanks for the post
-Joel!

I was 14 when I first got into prog as well. It's an underrated age I believe... It's good to see other younger people into prog.

Man I'm sure glad you posted, I was afraid I was gonna have to be the only forum member here that doesn't remember the 80's!

My dad has had a big influence on my musical tastes as well, but he is more involved in the Jam-Band category. You're pretty lucky to have someone else introduce you to new music, I'm pretty much on my own when it comes to musical exploration Its kind of a bummer, mostly because I never really know for sure if what I'm buying is really worth it, other than the 30 second samples.

Welcome to the site Phuncle.  Love your Avatar.  Lots of great stuff here, dig in.  I also became acquainted with prog around your age, though that was a while ago!

Very few things in life are worth four punctuation marks, and this is not one of them. ;-)

And you'll find that a lot of people around here starting listening to prog at around your age.

I was in the same position a few years ago (i'm 18 now) and had to find my own music, luckily this girl i was into like Tool, so i checked them out and found this site. She's long gone now, but my love for prog may never dissapear Big smile its good that your so deep into it at a young age though, i only got into the real proggy stuff just under a year ago and wish i'd known it my whole life Smile

Hey, listen, when I was 14, I was just getting into 'real' music, but by the time I was 16, I was completely infatuated with prog, so you're not the only youngin' who appreciates the genre. :)

Glad to have you here! Big smile

I've been hearing prog since I was 8 or 9 (mostly Dark Side of the Moon back then, as it's the only thing my parents have which is usually considered progressive) and then around 12 or 13 I found Primus, and found King Crimson through them, and found Yes by accident around the same time, along with a little jazz thanks to playing in the high school bands...since then, let's just say a bit of a chasm has been opening up between the music I listen to and the music my friends listen to.  Now I'm 21 and have been happily obsessed with prog for a nice little while.

Started listening to prog at about the age of 12 since my old man played me Roundabout - Yes.

Never looked back since.

A very warm welcome to the site. I love the fact that there are so many younger members on this site. I started listening to prog when I was thirteen - 32 years ago now. This genre just keeps on going and being relevant.

Enjoy....Hug

I got started about your age.  I'm 44 now and you can see the collection I've built up in my sig.  Probably 90-95% prog. Big smile
