Topic: Jazz Giants! Posted: July 05 2011 at 14:43 |
This is a poll about jazz giants (i.e. not necessarily fusion).
I've allowed multiple votes 'cos there's a lot of choices........ but please, don't abuse the system!

Hancock/Corea are obvious . Ponty rules

I never post anything anywhere without doing more than basic research, often in depth.

Where are Art Tatum and Erroll Garner, two geniuses of piano.

Perhaps people could just vote rather than list every jazz musician not on the list? We're talking about giants here. If you honestly will vote for those two as opposed to anything already in the poll, then I'll add them...... but if not, then please be quiet.

it's difficult to choose between a pianist, a trumpetist, a saxophonist, a violinist or a guitarist, don't you think ? Miles Davis is one of the best in his realm, same for John Coltrane etc...

Are you implying Charles Mingus isn't a giant of jazz? Or was that just directed at Lucas?
Anyway, out of those choices I voted Duke Ellington

That's why you are allowed to vote more than once!

Just Lucas. I'll add Mingus, although no, he didn't enter my mind as a giant exactly. Maybe top 50.

Because The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady is only among the greatest jazz compositions ever.
Now I voted for Mingus too :)

It goes without saying that that is a completely subjective statement.

Mingus would be a great one for the poll. The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady
is one of my very favourite jazz albums, and is commonly considered to be one of the greatest jazz albums along with Coltrane's A Love Supreme and others, and he is a giant of jazz, but
people can always mention others in posts and I've never thought poll
results matter themselves (though it seems you may just want to stick
with these than learn about other greats). I'd mention Sun Ra, Ornette
Coleman and Albert Ayler, but that's a reflection of my taste, and is
not to say that you should include them.
This list does have various favourites of mine: John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, and Thelonius Monk.
I won't vote in the poll, though, because I don't feel familiar enough with all of your choices.

Watching while most appreciating a sunset in the moment need not diminish all the glorious sunsets I have observed before. It can be much like that with music for me.

What I would say is.... if you have heard a substantial amount from more than half of them, it's fine to vote. And Mingus IS an option!

My first vote is for Bird, simply because Iīve met his animal sibling out in my parentīs garden. Itīs a blackbird who finds the tallest tree and starts singing bebop at the top its lungs - all day - all the time finding new ways to express itself. I do honestly believe jazz was invented by birds, and then stolen/replicated by man.

I did vote for Coltrane, Mingus, Monk, Davis, and Hancock, all of which I think superb. By the way, John Coltrane was my first big jazz love (Giant Steps and A Love Supreme being two of my most cherished albums).
