King Crimson, for the following reason: the Yes and VDGG albums were by groups just then discovering their musical voice; the Genesis pair showed a band at the beginning its downward career arc. But Crimson in 1974, and the album Red in particular, represented the pinnacle of Progressive Rock in the 1970s.

Depends on your point of view. On a site like this one many would agree. However, from a popularity and success standpoint, Genesis were just getting started. Nothing downward about that arc EDIT - damn typo
