So far, my definite 5-star albums for this year are:
Black Midi - Cavalcade
Caligonaut - Magnified as Giants
Ciccada - Harvest

Cavalcade especially, I listened to it for the first time the other day and was absolutely blown away.
I use they/them pronouns (feel free to ask me about this!)

Check out my music on my bandcamp!

This is all rather progressive, but maybe not all prog:

Matt Berry - The Blue Elephant
Atvm - Famine, Putrid and f**king Endless
Black Midi - Cavalcade
Needlepoint - Walking Up That Valley
Sault - NINE
King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard: L.W.
Elephant9 - Arrival Of The New Elders
Sons Of Kemet - Black To The Future
Karoline Wallace - Stiklinger
+ the previously unreleased:
Jerzy Milian / Orkiestra Rozrywkowa PRiTV w Katowicach - Znak Wodnika (recorded 1976-1978)

-listened to the latest King Gizzard. Its alright I suppose, but I hope they get out of their Tame Impala-phase really fast.

Probably the most prog thing on this (albeit, in my opinion, very strong) list

I had only managed to find three albums back in June when this was posted. I've been listening to some more new stuff over the last month. I think these all might be worthy of around 3.8 out of 5 and higher:

Cast - Vigesimus
Chance - Original Worlds
Cosmograf - Rattrapante
Caio Csizmar - Decriptas
Czyszy - Agent Mousey
The Emerald Dawn - To Touch the Sky
Ensemble 1 - Guitar, Bass & Drums
Eyesberg - Claustrophobia
The Flying Luttenbachers - Negative Infinity
French TV - All Our Failures Are Behind Us
Snakes Don't Belong in Alaska - The Eternal Electric Landscape
Sun Colored Chair - Seated
Stephan Thelen - Fractal Guitar 2
Transatlantic - The Absolute Universe: The Breath of Life (Abridged Version)

My favourite prog albums of this year so far (I've heard most of these just once up until now so my opinion may change in the future):
- Monobody - Comma
- Black Midi - Cavalcade
- The Fourth World Quartet - 1975
- Desertion Trio - Numbers Maker
- Real Loud - Real Loud
- Mahogany Frog - In The Electric Universe
- Sun Colored Chair - Seated
- Cody Carpenter - Memories And Dreams

Updating my list one month down the line, I'm going to add:
- Música D' Repuesto - Fake
- Fred Frith & Ikue Mori - A Mountain Doesn't Know It's Tall
- Machine Mass Sextet - Intrusion
- Gnohgnuhgnlus - Thomisme
- Greco Bastián - EP
- Owane - YOLO EP, Vol. 1

I'm just now listening to Black Midi, which is dominating these lists. Pretty good so far. Might have to pick it up Just bought both their CDs. Great pan head stuff.

Favs so far...a lot of listening yet to do.

Lind - A Hundred Years
Monobody - Comma
Canvas Solaris - Chromosphere
Schizofrantik - Funk from Hell
The Flying Luttenbachers - Negative Infinity

I had the same reaction with black midi. Immediately followed with Black Country New Road and Squid.

Haven't given much attention to the year's stuff yet but the new black midi, mono, Monobody, Ciccada, Beautiful Bedlam, and Unaka Prong releases are starting to get me excited.

It's not grabbing me quite like the last album did but I need a few more listens.

No one talks about this band on prog archives. Unhappy

I think I prefer it, it's darker and slightly less angular. Same issue on PE, someone just started a thread on them as a new band and I was like I've been listening to them for 5 years

I kept cutting down until I got to 50 which was relatively easy, and then down to 30, which was harder. But I really struggled to turn that 30 into 25. Eventually I managed, and just for the fuller picture, here in alphabetical order are the top 25, and also the next 25.

Top 25:

Æetheria Conscientia - Corrupted Pillars of Vanity
Aphexia - Interdependence
Black Country, New Road - For The First Time
Chassm - Falling Forever
Cronofonía - Cronofonía

Echoes and Signals - Mercurial
Fair Wind Pleases - The Wind of the Season
Five the Hierophant- Through Aureate Void
Föss - Memorias de la Peste
Grey Mouse - A Moment of Weakness

Grorr - Ddulden’s Last Flight
Dusan Jevtovic - Vasil Hadzimanov - DUO
Kurushimi - Chaos Remains
Laughing Stock - Zero
The Lion’s Daughter - Skin Show

Massen - ContrAesthetic
Minutian - Magical Thinking
Mission Jupiter - Talk to Me
River Flows Reverse - When River Flows Reverse
Sauropoda - Pangea

Shiva the Destructor - Find the Others
Toboggan - Première Descente
The Vicious Head Society - Extinction Level Event
Voronai - The Last Three Seconds
Way Wau Collectif - Yaral Sa Doom

Next 25:

Aborym - Hostile
Ad Nauseam - Imperative Imperceptible Impulse
The Anchoress - The Art of Losing
Ángel Ontalva - Songs to Say Goodbye
Årabrot - Norwegian Gothic

Asymmetry - Anima
Atravan - The Grey Line
Black Midi - Cavalcade
Dewa Budjana - Naurora
Confusion Field - Disconnection Complete

DROTT - DROTT
Jonatan Piña Duluc - Sountrack Vol.1: Secuencia
Chloe Herington - Silent Reflux
Isnaj Dui - Bright Star
JackDupon - La République Dominicale du Zoo

postcards from new zealand - city islands
Real Loud - Real Loud
Sons Of Kemet - Black To The Future

Squid - Bright Green Field
Triangle Singular - Starbreaker
Varego - Varego
VOLA - Witness
Steven Wilson - The Future Bites

I’ve listened to not quite 200 releases from 2021 so far, and I still haven’t scratched the surface, as I seem to have listened to hardly any of the albums featuring in the lists for the year so far I’ve seen in the last couple of weeks!

You are one of the few that can produce a big list that is 80-90% artists I have never heard of.
I have not decided yet if they fit our scope well enough to bring up for suggestion, but that Squid album is a real corker.

Squid, Black Midi and Black Country, New Road are three quite impressive young British bands who are exploring similar sounds from different directions.

If they are any other bands you’re interested, almost every one of those in my list have Bandcamp pages, and quite a few are Name Your Price. Many of them I have reviewed for TPA, and a few I am thinking of suggesting for inclusion in PA.
