I don't agree with that, I check out recommendations most of the time, especially from people I trust or have similar tastes.

I wasn't entirely serious, but generally I do prefer actively looking for new music over getting recommendations. I'm always glad when people recommend music to me, but usually I'll see what they are listening to and/or rating highly, and then decide to check it out myself.

I typically use Sputnikmusic, Bandcamp, Sea of Tranquility, ProgArchives, Metal Music Archives, or Progfreak (or TYM now) for my fix Smile

^ Sputnik is nice, I like the clean interface. Should adopt that as a template at TYM, I'm always trying to display too much data in too small a space ...

I'm one of the contributors on there (Koris) Big smile

As much as I like being a collab on PA, Sputnik has been my musical homestead for as long as I can remember. I've even gotten some of my reviews and articles on there featured on Wikipedia and Metacritic, which is pretty damn cool

^ Nice! Might create a sputnikBot at TYM this weekend, just to import the new releases.

Metacritic ... I've seen it, but is it big in music? I thought they mainly focus on movies ...

Metacritic definitely specializes in movies and video games, but once in a while they'll get in on new albums... regardless, they're kinda like the Rotten Tomatoes of the music space LOL

But hey, I'm glad that I was able to sway the averages once in a while Smile

My ideal idea for these top albums lists is to set up a list of accounts which you trust in terms of taste and preference. Then there should be a ranking mode that only uses those ratings. Then, instead of changing the averages for all users, you could make more of a difference in for the users that do care about your input.

Both provide lists of upcoming releases and those already released.  They also provide links to Bandcamp, Youtube, etc. to give them a listen.

Hi,

In general, I do not "look" for music ... that was done 50 years ago, while slumming on places like Tower Records (on the Strip_, Rasputin's (Berkeley) and a bunch of stores that had used LP's since the majority of stuff dumped were the too many copies of Elton John, Rolling Stones, or Black Sabbath, but also all the other things the radio stations got they never bothered to listen to ... in this case, I picked up Roy Harper, Kevin Ayers, and others, and one day, a Kevin Ayers album had an inner sleeve that had a CEREAL BOX with the ingredients listed ... the ingredients were? The bands in the HARVEST label, and I picked up all of those and a year later Harvest took on Germany and a couple of European bands, and I got those also ... heck, I still have "Cherubin" and I wish I had not gotten rid of the "Tanned Leather" albums! Both hard to get now!

since January 1974, though, my old roommate (till the end of 1978) Guy Guden, was the best there was anywhere at new materials and he once listed all his stuff (in the first year of 1974 of SPR), and it was already over 100 artists ... and you're not going to find that these days anywhere. Guy's show has changed some, a bit more commercial than before if I can say that, but I miss the old days of complete sides of KS, TD, and many others ... while Guy, likely, was in the studio goofing with his comedy bits as the whole album side played I think. Nowadays, on Twitch, Guy is still very strong when it comes to new things, though his material these days is an extraordinary mix of everything, but missing kitchen sinks, jets, farts, and other sound effects which his shows were full of. I had the tapes to show it (!!!) and gave Guy a copy of all of them last year .. over 330 hours in 4 plus years!

Music, these days, comes to me, although hearing it in Guy's show helps, since his tastes in music and its selection are incredible and really well done, in almost 50 years of his doing his show ... as I mention to Mr. Hed ... Guy had the touch before he started on radio full blast, but still ... it takes an extraordinary ear to do what he does, instead of the many shows that do "progressive" and half the material is just a copy, and should not be considered "progressive" ... a copy is not "progressive"!
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

^I never heard of Guy but I have heard of Mark Kreuger who does a show called Planet Prog. It might be one of the very few prog shows that is broadcast on "regular" radio (fm). It's also probably one of the longest running (since 1977). http://www.planetprog.com/ I don't know if it's still active though since the playlist looks like it hasn't been updated since 2018.

There's also the Gagliarchives that is on every Saturday night and Tuesdays on aural moon and also on live radio in New Jersey.

Chiefly here (both in the database and in the forums), but sometimes Bandcamp and Rate Your Music.

As for buying new releases: anywhere that it is available with a reasonable price (and shipping price), but primarily Wayside Music, LaserCD, Discogs, and Bandcamp. Lesser used options might include Ebay, Amazon, SquidCo, importCDs.com, or the band's website.

If my primary stores aren't getting particular imports (meaning outside the U.S.), I may resort to the band's Bandcamp page or their own website. I found imports via Discogs have had some rather high shipping costs from some European countries post-pandemic, sometimes higher than the price of the CD. Syn-phonic Music sells via Discogs. Greg Walker usually has the best prices from some Japanese imports, particularly from the Belle Antique label. They're still expensive, but he has had the best prices.

I used to buy CDs from Kinesis, but that is no longer active. The seller that owned this is still selling off the rest of his stock on Discogs (at least the last time I checked back in 2022).

^  Actually, Greg still sells through his synphonic website also (that's how I buy (unless I don't have a choice) since I don't want to pay extra for extra taxes that seem to be on discogs and nowhere else). He sends stuff out pretty fast and if you have a long history with him and he trusts you then he will usually send stuff out before he gets a payment. They are good for classic prog and new stuff also. I bought tons of stuff from Larry at Kinesis during covid but at some point all that was left was really obscure low priority stuff and I eventually switched to Laser's Edge (Laser CD), Wayside and Synphonic. I also used to buy from ZNR but not much and now they're mostly just on discogs although a website still exist (unlike Kinesis).

That's the biggest challenge! Specially now that the great Ukranian site "new prog releases" has a problem due to c++t komrad Pukin.
- I recommend you to google individual members of your favourite bands and see what they are producing and follow the ever further splinters.
- Second, I have a magazine here in B (Progresiste) that publishes their favourite releases per month and give a 5" preview of what it sounds like. Incredible amounts of total clichés despite being the "best of the month" (why are reviewers so clueless?). But sometimes an amazing jewel.

There used to be a guy here who published a list of all the recent new releases, but it occurs to me that I haven't seen this for a few months. Also, I regularly read new reviews posted on the home page, and discover much there whether it's new or not.

I hadn't seen this before, but I went and looked at your profile for the site, and now I'm very much appreciating this.

I'm not sure I understand you or your posts. Are you trying to be a troll but suck at it, or are you actually trying to communicate something?
