Peart. It's a bit like comparing Jimi Hendrix and John Petrucci.

I'd have to say that Ringo is much better than Charlie Watts. Wink

Also, I like Peart more than Portnoy, but I like Portnoy more all the time!

Portnoy is a much better technical player and his playing can adapt to any style!

If you actually think those statements are true then there's nothing I can do for you. You either aren't familiar with the drummers or you're just ignorant.

I would say Peart 9 times out of 10 but watching the new Dream Theater DVD Score made me change my mind and say Portnoy has surpassed Peart. His beats are so complex and hard to follow, even moreso than Peart's in my opinion. As someone else said, he is amazingly versatile as well and is definitely the superior of the two when it comes down to usage of bass drum. Portnoy for me but Peart is my definite number 2.

Portnoy, without a doubt!

I don't find Neil's drumming anything impressive at all. Well, at least most of it.

I was joking, but anybody that knows me on here knows how much I love Danny Carey,I just couldn't resist.

He's just such an incredibly talented, interesting drummer to listen to.

It's all good. Actually, I should root for Carey because he's a local boy (from around Kansas City) and went to college at The University of Missouri-Kansas City. I did watch a snippit of him on the Modern Drummer website and the man is an amazing talent. He's playing this power groove, wedges a stick under his arm, grabs a huge mallet and whacks the gong without breaking rhythm. He is awesome.

Is this seriously a poll?  Peart is way better all around.  Portnoy is most likely better with the dub bass.

Peart. After all, Peart is Portnoy's idol (from what i've heard). Correct me if I'm wrong.

I can understand all the Rush fan boys voting Peart but take it from a drummer, Portnoy is a far better player. He is also more eclectic & capable of adapting to different styles. Just look at his side projects! What has Peart done outside of Rush?

Also, from any drummers among you I urge you to watch any teaching videos or drum clinics by either Peart or Portnoy and then tell me if Peart is better!

Eh, I may be a drummer wannabe, but it's going to take a bit more to convince me that Portnoy's better. Besides, what does the number of side projects have to do with how good you are?

I also like Transatlantic more, but Peart is clearly Sperior. As Good as Portnoy is, it's hard to outclass Neal.

You're absolutely rightClap

A lot of young drummers - after they had been watching Neil Peart's performances in various situations - resigned as music drummers --> Peart was fantastic player.

Portnoy didn't give upSmile
