The marimba solo in "The Runaway" by Gentle Giant is truly immaculate.

As mentioned before, Zappa has some great mallet work. Check out the song "RDNZL" from his album Studio Tan.

Embryo have lots of vibraphone and the likes. Both leader Christian Burchard and his daughter Maja, who became a member a few years ago, play it, among other instruments. Burchard also plays drums, dulcimr and keyboards, Maja also plays trombone and keyboards.

BTW, the bonus DVD for their latest album show plenty of video footage from the recording of the vibraphone parts.

Also, how could I forget one of my favourite bands, Tortoise?

The album "Gazeuse!" by Gong is extremely heavy on mallet percussion, and a great fusiony listen. Also, Captain Beefheart's "The spotlight Kid/Clear Spot" two=fer has a lot of marimba on it.

You'll recognize it in many moments of the samples bellow, if you're used to spot its sound.

Can't go wrong with these guys, I have yet to get an album but the samples are amazing!

I totally agree. Burton's RING and PASSENGERS are masterpieces, and they both come pretty close to prog. (Note that they both feature TWO electric guitarists - one of whom is Pat Metheny - and two bassists - one of whom is Eberhard Weber - as well as vibes and drums, all performing together without sounding cluttered!)

By the way, if you like GAZEUSE (and ESPRESSO II, I suppose), have you heard Gongzilla as well? They sometimes come pretty close to Pierre Moerlen's Gong; at least they've inherited his mantle.

And Ruth Underwood is just superb on ROXY AND ELSEWHERE!

Nobody mentioned the legendary Ollie Halsall - who did some wonder short vibe solos for Timebox (proto jazz rock.rock jazz band of the late 60's) - and as I wrote before, who I saw once try to do a Keith Moon destruction job on his vibes at the end of a set, one Sunday evening in '69 or '70 at Tolworth's Toby Jug.  Halsall's multi-instrument playing including vibes continued with at least the first two Patto albums.

And a session vibist/percussionist  who's name used to regularly appear on the back covers of UK rock/prog albums, is Frank Riccotti - a number of sites picked by Google Search will lead you to albums, including Wakeman's 6 Wives.

Also some wonderful jazzrock fusion vibes from Mike Mainieri found on Steps Ahead albums (the the eponymous one is where to start with Mike Brecker also in great form). Mainieri has done a number of great albums under his own name. Then there is Tunnels' leader Marc Wagnon, who's latest solo album I've marked out as the best release last month for Jazzwise magazine - but beware he also plays Midi vibes:

natural selection CD cover

And mustn't forget the granddaddy, Lionel Hampton. And where better to sample some of the best 30's live jazz and Hampton's vibes, than:

Famous 1938 Carnegie Hall Jazz Concert:

SmileJohn 'Poli' Palmer used a lot of Vibraphone on the Family lps he played on; 'A Song for me', Anyway, Fearless & Bandstand. Apparently when Roger Chapman (Family lead singer) heard him play he said (something like) ''I don't 'arf like the sound of 'em bottle things- shall we 'ave 'im in the band?''

Gentle Giant used a lot of Vibraphone and Glockenspiel from 1973 until 1976, especially on Interview and Free Hand. Check those albums out!

I'm dying to know what mallet based song this is!? It was used in the background of BBC's Top Gear. I've already contacted BBC and it has never been identified anywhere online, including the fansite Final Gear.

Thanks!

Thanks for the response. I checked and that isn't it, unfortunately.

Anybody else have any ideas?

I wasn't even answering you, just the OP. I  know that Top Gear thing isn't  Incantations. Nothing like it at all.
