This--but like the Seconds out version more as most of Genesis before SEBTP for me is messed up by bad production

I'm with the rest of the herd on this : I think it's one of the greatest Genesis tunes and a very important epic :)

Personally, doesn't quite match my tastes well, so I'm stuck somewhere between impassive and boring.

More towards"Super", but not entirely. There are parts I like more than others.
I love the instrumental part with acoustic guitars that begins when he says "hasn't it?". Great atmosphere and mood.
The "guaranteed eternal sanctuary man" part is kind of long winded and tedious.
The short section afterwards with the flute melody is nice.
I'm not a fan of the "Waiting for Battle"-part.
I love the "Wandering in the chaos " part.
The "A flower?" part is quite nice and fun.
The section that follows with the flute melody that bridges over to the 9/8 part isn't very interesting .
The 9/8 part is fabulous, particularly the instrumental sections with the organ soloing and the mellotron that comes in later.
It ends with the "guaranteed eternal sanctuary man" theme, which again isn't great. Edited by wilmon91 - October 07 2012 at 16:45 |

In my opinion, it's one of the greatest pieces of music ever written. I find it deeply moving and poignant, in a symbolic way, and the end section may be the most beautiful thing I have ever heard.

Probably is my favourite epic and it has to be the studio version. I don't like the mixing on the Seconds Out version and Chesters drumming is pretty lame on some of it before Collins joins in on the apocalpyse section.
It has everything for me. Genesis are great when they are bombastic and there are two great sections in particular (waiting for battle and the obvious one). There is also some humour, some surrealism and brilliant ambient transitions. Genesis for me hit their peak when they made Foxtrot.

I'm a big time Genesis fan. That's how I entered the world of Prog. In fact, I've been playing and enjoying Supper's Ready a lot over the past week. I get in to it quite a bit. However, much as with the whole album except for Horizons, I can't go beyond saying simply that I like it. The whole sound is sparse and does nothing with sound and timbre to bring out the sci-fi/fantasy theme of it's storyline. It seems to lack the texture of Trespass, the thick stacking of sound from Nursery Cryme, the tasteful brilliance of SEBTP, and the manipulation of mood in the Lamb. By Genesis' own standards, I think that Fountain of Salmacis, the Musical Box, Salvation, White Mountain, The Knife, The Battle of Epping Forest, The Lamia, and many others on the Lamb make for better epics.

Well, it's super, great or fantastic... you can choose. A part of my youth and I like to listen to it until these days... It's one of basic stones of the whole progressive rock IMHO...

This is just about my opinion as well, although I think the band hit their peak around when they made SEBTP. Much prefer Gabriel's voice to Collins. Also, to the previous poster who complains about the production values of recordings made before SEBTP, they should listen to the 2007 remastered versions of those albums. They lose nothing compared to the later Genesis albums.
