My favorite Genesis lyrics: Harold the Barrel. The song is mistaken by many as a humorous throwaway. Actually it's a very tragic song with tremendous insight into human nature. The very last part, where Harold jumps into oblivion, never fails to give me shivers. For this poll, though, went with Blood on the Rooftops.

Blood on the Rooftops is one of the best lyrics they ever did. An atmospheric 'list poem' that perfectly captures domestic British post-war melancholy. In fact Eleventh Earl of Mar and One For the Vine are also among their best. They may not have had the surreal cutting edge associated with Gabriel but these songs are thoughtful and evocative in a way that many of their later lyrics weren't. They definitely add to the songs for me; I've never been in the 'lyrics don't matter' camp.

Tend to agree---about the Blood on the Rooftops---Banks has said it is one of his fav songs--on one of his favorite Genesis albums---one which he contributed a lot--strangely enough on all the rest of the album but not on Rooftops.

Let's skip the news boy (I'll make some tea). The Arabs and the Jews boy (too much for me). They get me confused boy (puts me off to sleep). And the thing I hate - Oh Lord! Is staying up late, to watch some debate, on some nation's fate.

When he rides, my fears subside. For darkness turns once more to light. Through the skies, his white horse flies. To find a land beyond the night.

Not my favourite song on the album but I voted All In A Mouses Night because the lyrics are very amusing.

No idea which is the favourite lyric but YOSW is still way too sentimental for me. i.e. it's fine though. I think some love for Afterglow (which is an amazing piece)...but it feels odd not voting for One For The Vine...

I like the fact that many of the songs on this album tell stories. |
Yes, that is an opinion which I agree 100%, and it's something that I really enjoy of W&W. By the way One for the vine is for me, one of the best song lyrics I ever heard (or read), maybe the best of Genesis, and of course the music of this track is stunning too and fit very well with the lyrics. Afterglow comes second. The other lyrics are there too, great lyrics, Blood on the rooftops, 11th Earl, Mouses night and even Your own special way, a high quality romantic piece.
