Grace by a Gnat's whisker.
Spoke to Guthrie Govan a couple of weeks ago at the Adelaide Guitar Festival. Says he goes into the studio this month to start work on the next SW album.

Grace for Drowning. Raven doesn't do it for me, I agree with the comments about it feeling mechanical, and sorta made for the masses, to win over the fanboys, which it did. Different strokes for different folks I guess, but nothing on Raven stands out to me, feels very very uninspired. Grace for Drowning kicks all the ass though. Well rounded album, with ambiance, heavy prog, experimental insanity, and even some songs you could hear being played on the radio. My favorite thing Wilson has done since Deadwing.

I got Grace for Drowning after seeing all the great reviews it got, without knowing anything from him or PT (except that they were fairly succesful). And really I was very pleasantly surprised. Something new and different... I feel it's the natural succesor to King Crimson's Islands, but for the new age. When Steven announced he was doing another album so closely after GfD, I was rather exceptical about him trying to follow such a great album... specially since I had heard "Luminol" from the live tour DVD and hadn't done much for me. Still, as soon as I got Raven, Luminol immediatley clicked and the whole album ended up being awsome. In the end it's Raven for me. I wonder if Steve will be able to keep up this great string of albums with his next release.

I went with The Raven here. I think some of the songs on Grace for Drowning may be better (Sectarian, Deform to Form a Star and Index in particular for me) but as a whole, I prefer The Raven. Both are excellent though.

The Raven That Refused to Sing (And Other Stories). |

When he rides, my fears subside.
For darkness turns once more to light. Through the skies, his white horse flies. To find a land beyond the night. |

I think I voted rather abruptly for Raven. Just gave Grace a spin and truly forgot how intense and amazing it is.
Also love that horned figure pictured in the sleeves. Edited by Tom Ozric - August 04 2014 at 01:30 |

All three of SW's solo albums are outstanding if truth be told, there are many moments of pure genius on all three. Each time I listen to a SW album I think that's the best then change my mind when I hear one of the other two!
As for the poll, the atmosphere of Grace is a big factor, it's a riveting listen, it's fantastic, but I've got to go with The Raven here, a modern prog classic.
