I'm going to take exception to that remark on the grounds that it perpetuates the "women don't like prog" stereotype. Because they do.

There's a difference between "long songs" and "prog songs".

I didn't think it was too rude, I just think it perpetuates an incorrect stereotype.

There are definitely many more male prog fans than female prog fans. I know it is an unfair when this is generalised, but the stereotype does have foundation in truth.

There are also way more male murderers than female ones. Coincidence?

Looks like these albums need some sort of warning on the backs. 'Warning, listening may cause homicide'.

well, that depends. Have we yet established a link between prog and murder? and if so, will someone write a 20 minute neo-prog epic (complete with keyboard solos) about it?

I don't get what your intention was by saying that. We know that there a more male murderers than female murderers, we know there are more male prog fans than female prog fans. There doesn't need to be a direct link.

I read it in an offended tone, so I wasn't sure how to respond. Getting back to the matter at hand, it seems that a lot of people, even some prog fans, regard prog as somehow unemotional, and somehow believe more emotion can be found in a persistent 4/4 drum machine beat. I personally consider Fallen Angel by King Crimson one of the most emotional songs that I've ever heard.

Another thing about prog fans is the choice is either freedom through odd meters, or 4/4 drum machine prison. Everybody is trying to make the other guy look bad here. I think the basics of the argument are that some people enjoy the idea of a more textured music being possible; a second group would find that very comment pretentious; and most people, in an effort to drown our silly bickering out, would stick their headphones on and listen to the new tracks they downloaded illegally last week.

I think the revulsion to odd time sigs also goes back to what Toddler was saying in his comment. If you wean people off complexity for too long, they may not know what to make of it as they will find it unfamiliar. The rule of thumb is people don't respond well to whatever is outside their comfort zone and prefer to assume it is 'wrong'. Ideological dogma is dangerous, in music or otherwise. That position held in mainstream music since the 80s is that complexity of any kind is bad. What is bad is an excess of complexity where it is not apt. Taking all complexity to be bad is only to restrict your options. You can see the presence of dogma in the way Police strenuously deny the sophistication in their music and call it accidental, so that they can maintain their anti prog stance. Called poseurism in metal parlance.

I remmember that at the time when I was a kid in middle 70s that people who didn't like to listen prog rock that they were about it as "it's a sad music" or "too psycho", rather than "boring". I think the reason is that back then all young people were listening to some rock music; if not prog, it was Rock, Hard Rock, Blues Rock, Southern Rock... and all of that was more or less a good stuff although not prog as the most artistic rock genre ever. Today, the music is ghettoised so much that all the kinds of music are more and more "boring" just if it fall outside of our own personal taste and (or) our circle of friends.

I agree. Screw finding other prog fans, I can't find other rock fans.
