The thing that annoys me is that people who don't like prog, say it's because prog is boring. Even prog that had mainstream succes is said to be boring, for example Pink Floyd. I can't understand why people say prog is boring, as I find acts as VDGG, Genesis and Porcupine Tree anything from boring. I can understand people calling music boring when the music is quiet and soft... but lots of pop and R 'n B also is very soft, and that is not said to be boring.
This can't be a matter of tastes. I am, for example, not a fan of rap, but for disliking it I don't find it boring. Same thing with other styles of modern music, like modern pop and dance. That music does not entertain me, but I don't think it's boring at all.
My question here is: what makes people find progressive music a boring form of music? |
Probably has more to do with the year they were born. Youth are interested in fitting in and being popular and easily influenced. Good for you that you don't follow the sheepish herd mentality of your peers. There are so many reasons why progressive rock has lost it's popular fan base. I am sure there are endless threads about it here. But generally speaking, computers have made it too easy to make complicated sounding music with little talent, so it doesn't impress most in a real way. With some of the bands you mentioned, they didn't use computers. I refuse to listen to music made on computers. That's how I deal with it.

My opinion on this matter is that is it all about ATTENTION SPAN!!
Prog is more for music listeners that have patience and have a keen ear for detail. Music for us proggers is not just to sound great of course, but to challenge us....make us think not only to what is being played/heard at the time but the lyrics as well add an incredible immersion. You do not find this in some flavor of the week pop track or a lot of today's commercial music. I find that a lot of people I know in my life don't really like to listen to music that makes them think. Getting someone to listen to a 10min track is like pulling teeth.
I am just glad I am who I am. ;)
Discoverd what I've discovered. People who don't like prog it's simply their loss. Can't do anything to help them.

This is true. Prog is a special taste, an acquired taste sometimes. Can't imagine anyone being bored while listening to songs like Tarkus or Hemispheres for instance but I can't abide rap "music" so I guess that's simply my loss (it's really not though ;) )

It's simply a preference. We all have them, but I just can't possibly fathom having bubble gum music as my main music resource. Music for me is too beautiful...to personal. I just have to accept that it's not like that for everyone. Hard to imagine a life without Quality tunes.

Well, what may sound like bubblegum to you may sound magical or personal etc to somebody else. I know people who feel overwhelmed by Let it Go. So there you are.

I actually would not mind a few responses, but they were all in jest and silly ... and that kinda shows that in the end, we're not intelligent enough to even discuss the merits of the left bollock of Genghis Khan!

With all the mumbling you do, I am sure we know where the right bollock went. You must be the reason they called Genghis the "half-hung Hun". Or was it Genghis the "Monogol"?

Progressive Rock is for people who require a bit more from their music. Many people just want nice tunes, and/or something they can dance to. They aren't looking for music which provides an atmosphere. Honestly, it's probably the same reason a lot of people don't listen to free jazz or classical music. They find it meandering or boring. True emotional thrust, above and beyond basic (often trite) lyrics is not something they look for.

It's a bit like asking why a person doesn't like the taste of shrimp or prime rib...TASTE. That may sound condescending but I mean everyone has their own tastes and we can't all be expected to like everything. There's a ton of music on the radio that would classify as "boring" (I only listen to radio when my morning alarm goes off and never else except for CBC Radio 1 in the car occasionally) but I could ague that some of it is still 'good'. It's just that I can't stand to hear it over and over.
As an example, the first time I heard "Shake it off" by Taylor Swift I thought it was a catchy, well produced tune. I had no idea at the time who it was as I was totally unaware of who she was or anything she had done. But after a week of waking up to the same song in that 20 minute wake up spot I had no desire to ever hear it again. The same can be said for many of the other "Hits" that have aired in the last year or so.
Who knows, maybe I don't understand Pop any more than they understand Prog!

Thank you for supporting independently produced music

Subjectivity - what's fascinating to us is boring to others. We may find EDM trite and contrived, but others find it the perfect medium to dance to.

Why are you waking up to pop? Is it motivation to jump out of bed fast and shut that crap off?
