I always thought Phil's solo albums had this neat album cover concept. Just his serious intense balding mug, as if he was just about to yank the pickle out of his ass and slam it down the cameraman's mouth.

What you're saying is that I would be up against the Phil Collins Mafia?

What you're saying is that I would be up against the Phil Collins Mafia?

No, just an individual fan from either the Collins or Genesis camp who'd question the logic and bravery of "clock"ing a sub-6-foot, historically relevant prog V.I.P.

I think Phil is great. Rutherford was as much to blame as Phil for taking Genesis in a more commercial-sounding direction. Rutherford is the member who is most dismissive of early Genesis classics. Whereas Phil has stated that Genesis were at their peak on The Lamb album. So I think that Phil has become a scapegoat for every misguided fool who believes that he was responsible for the demise of the golden age of prog.

Phil was good a prog when he was doing it, he was good at pop when was doing it.  He's not really missed as Big Big Train's vocalist, David Longdon sounds a lot like him.  Even if I am repeating myself, Gabriel and Hackett bailing were the best things for their solo careers and Genesis turning into a successful pop band.   Which may or may not sit well some of us...

I've met Seal team members, sir, and you're no Seal! If you're serious now, how can you call the three remaining members of Genesis pieces of %$#@ around the time Hackett left? And Then There Were Three showed they'd not abandoned prog just yet after two key components of the band had bailed (and go get 'em, HackettFan)!

At least Gentle Giant had the guts to call it quits after Civilian rather than pander to the record company. Civilian was actually a decent album. I saw Genesis in Germany in 2007 I think. They only played a few tracks from the Gabriel era and the young people in the audience were like stunned deer in headlights. One track I remember was Carpet Crawlers and it was completely Phil Colonized. Sounded like a piece f garbage from No Jacket Required.

I am definitely not a Navy Seal. They don't really like advertising.

Ok...fair enough.  Smile
I do find it a bit disconcerting how many members seem angry about Collin's solo work and later Genesis  material.
I don't listen to them but I have no feelings one way or another about it.

I'll sum it up this way: Prog fans miss '70's Genesis. Phil, not so much. I'm still with PTSD over his solo career ubiquity, afraid it will become fashionable again.Dead

Like him as a drummer. not the best ever but more than adequate.
i can tolerate the few songs he sings on Gabriel-era stuff, but after that, my interest nose-dives.

I agree. I mean, to me the fact that Genesis gradually also succeeded at Pop proved just what a great band they were. Here they were one of the leaders and pioneers of progressive rock, and then to become one of the greatest commercial-pop bands with sold out world tours is a testament to their greatness and success.

Gabriel and Hackett jumping off the mothership was inevitable. It was the end of Chapter One. Like the old cliche if there's anything that's a constant it's change. And change is good. Chapter Two- all members went on to greater heights.
I don't think it was just Collins that led Genesis to Pop- Banks & Rutherford (as the core writers), also willingly contributed. I think its totally unfair to just bash or blame Collins for the change to Pop-It was a natural evolution...
