Calling the radio station right now, hang on.. Well I described the song exactly as you did.. and they hung up on me! Anyway, doesn't really ring a bell but if I hear something like that I'll definitely let you know. Oh wait. I just turned on the radio and I hear music! I'm guessing that's what you mean by "notes" but not sure.. darn it a female voice singing(not a guy). So close! I don't know how much money a 'schmillion dollars' is but I'm thinking it could really help around the holidays. I'll keep trying..

"It is a prog rock type song, slow tempo, prime use of the chorused/phased electric piano up front which start the song.Vocal and instrument come in as far as I recall in about 1 minute. Very moody piece. I wish I could tell you more," hey Batphink Staircase to the Day by Gravy Train is very moody, slow prog rock and vocals start after a synthesizer's electric sound. in the last 2 minutes scales go up. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Z7ZdQohDQk How long was that song you are looking for? This does bring to mind memories of my own. In college I used to record stuff off the great college radio station (CKCU in Ottawa). Often I would not get to hear who played them, and I would listen for a long time without knpowing. One of them turned out to me "Law and Order" by 801 with Phil Manzanera. I don't remember how I eventually found out. Another one was "Breakdown" by Peter Hammill from "Sitting Targets", which I eventually found out after coincidentally buying the album.
Stations like Q107 playd a variety of prog and proggish music long after it was popular, but it did tend to be the bigger names. Maybe it was an offshoot of UK or FM, like 801?

I'm trying to figure out what this one prog song is. It's over three minutes long and has keyboards, a guitar, bass and drums on it. Any idea?

I'd like to thank the few decent ones who tried to help me I appreciate your time!
Jeffro for a Senior Member I'd say you're a bit of a t**ser personally.Napalm Death isn't prog so you don''t know nearly as much as I and you're talking to an actual composer/multi instrumentalist so grow up child. Edited by Batphink - December 24 2017 at 18:10 |

Been thinking about this for a long time, and like everybody else has said it is not a lot to go on.It's like throwing darts at a dartboard blind folded. It could be any 100's of tracks I have in my music archive on any 1,000's of albums from the late 60's or 70's.
All I can do is take some sort of wild guess at what it might or could be, at least it will eliminate that one single track from the every growing list of possible tracks. My guess is that it may be a part of Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells PT 1.Near the end there is a spoken part where Mike introduces the instruments one by one which gradually builds up the tune. This if I remember correctly was never played in full on the radio, The DJ's simply played the parts they wanted to. I can remember hearing the last part played a couple of times in the late 70's or early 80's on the radio. Sorry I cannot be of any more help, but we really need a little more to go on.

Scruffy Dragon thanks much for your suggestion.
Being a producer of music myself,I can tell you that the song I seek is from what I remember a mid 70's probably no earlier than 74 or 75 but more likely actually from 77 and no later than 1980,I can tell that by the sound quality and production value. The electric piano has a chorus effect on int similar to what Jean Luck Ponty's keysman had that sort of modern flowing wide sound. The chords start and seem to gradually induce a sense of tension and I believe the vocal comes in within about 1 minute with ,drums, bass guitar etc.So it takes more a song form. The middle has a melodic guitar solo that gets more intense and frenetic with I think arpeggio or speed picking later on. I still feel the singer sounded a lot like John Wetton or Cameron Hawkins of Canadian prog rockers FM. Hope that helps I wish I had some words or a definite melody and sorry it this is frustrating for some people Merry Christmas 2017! Edited by Batphink - December 25 2017 at 03:19 |

Hey a fellow Canadian(phew) lol,
Thanks Kenneth I will check those suggestions right away! Glad someone else remembers Q-107 FM in its prime! I've searched practically every CANADIAN prog band and rock band I could think of. If this is the song that money will be coming your way. Ill be in touch Merry Christmas mate Batphink :) Edited by Batphink - December 25 2017 at 03:31 |

Well,I'm thinking it could be Barclay James Harvest-their songs are often "moody" as you described it. But their keyboards are usually a mellotron. Do you know the difference between electric piano and mellotron? (think Moody Blues). Hey- can you rule out the Moody Blues? many of their songs fit your description. I posted yesterday that you should Google Styx's Father OSA.Have you done that? I've had a partial song floating in my head for decades and I'd LOVE to know what it was so I can hear it again.I'll post that question soon.

Oh man that sounds familiar.. I'm almost certain I've heard it before. If I remember the name of it I'll definitely let you know! Batphink, hey man we're just messing around having a good time. No offense intended. On a serious note though, if I do hear something that meets your description I will certainly let you know. Hope you're having a great Christmas! |
