I posted a similar poll on 06 March 2018, which is now closed. My poll deliberately excluded Eclectic Prog (as well as Various Genres/Artists, Prog Related and Proto-Prog). Symphonic Prog was the clear winner of the poll with 39.29% (22 votes) of the votes. |

No, I know how to behave in the restaurant now, I don't tear at the meat with my hands. If I've become a man of the world somehow, that's not necessarily to say I'm a worldly man.

I like my prog dressed in a long and disrespectful pop song which crazily dreams to reach the top of the charts.

I don't know what basis to use to make my decision. For example, my favourite group is Van der Graaf Generator, but that isn't really a reason to choose the entire sub-genre, as it turns out that I have albums from relatively few Eclectic Prog artists. Also, some of my favourite albums come from Experimental/Post Metal and Post Rock/Math Rock, even though I don't consider myself a fan of either sub-genre in general. And while I do have many Crossover Prog albums, I don't feel a strong emotional attachment to that sub-genre. I suppose a tentative ordering of my favourite sub-genres, based on rather loose criteria, is: 1. Symphonic Prog |

Symphonic a little ahead of the others, except for prog metal, which I don't get at all.

Some of them change from time to time but right now I'd say: Psychedelic/Space Rock (I'm including Krautrock on this tag :P) Progressive Electronic (Guess I'm on the right team) Rock Progressivo Italiano Eclectic Prog Jazz Rock/Fusion (Including Canterbury. Tied with Symphonic and Crossover)

Your Top 5 is almost identical to mine, only in a slightly different order. The same goes for Progosopher's Top 5 too.

Symphonic, Eclectic, Heavy, Canterbury... then the choice gets tough among JazzRock, Zeuhl, RIO, Folk, Neo and RPI

1. Symphonic
2. Eclectic 3. Metal 4. Heavy 5. Neo I haven't heard much from other subgenres. It's kinda hard to find anything in my corner of the world. Crossover is just too pop for me, so it's not on my top 5. |

I'm on a huge Canterbury kick at the moment and I really think that might take the cake for me. But man, theres stuff from nearly every genre I love, still yet to properly explore krautrock, Indo and Post rock but I guess right now my ranking would be
1: Cantebury 2: Symphonic (so close) 3: Eclectic prog 4: Crossover prog 5: Prog Folk Jazz fusion could knock 4 or 5 off on any given day. Also loving Opeth and Death atm for tech/extreme

Well, there should be good and not so good artists within all these boxes. Personally I think I tend to like more musicians that are labelled proto-prog, prog-related or crossover-prog on this site, but also many things labelled krautrock or eclectic prog. As for the symphonic genre, there are of course things I listen to on a relatively regular basis. However, I believe I often go more for sonic experimentation, avant-garde, sound layers and eclecticism rather than complex song structures, unsusual time signatures and changes of tempo and key. Also, a lot of symphonic rock tends to be a little - how should I say it - highflown. But then, I feel a bit uncomfortable about boxes, though I understand the necessity of them. The best music often combines many different style elements, and that is what make it interesting, at least for me.
