Google, Google, always bloody google....it's obviously a great search engine (the main Google one, I mean), but I like to have the choice, to be able to sit, chin in hands, and decide, "maybe this time I'll go to the Google page and search".
Instead, it's there in yer face, whether you want it or not.

We recently redownloaded RealPlayer (after the contents of our hard drive went walkabout), and guess what? It also installs the Google toolbar, whether you want it or not....

I think it's a bit OTT, frankly - do they think there's some computer user on this planet who hasn't yet heard of Google?? It'd be nice to be able to view the occasional web page without the G-word hitting you over the head, screaming "look at me!" I think that their omniprescence is working against their popularity, bigtime...

Absence makes the heart grow fonder....Wink

As far as the PA main page search engine is concerned, I liked it how it was, and don't like it how it is....a few discrete mentions of the G-word would be quite adequate in that context, surely...but that's just pissing in the wind, I guess....

I quite see that ads are necessary - someone has to pay for running such a comprehensive site, where we get a lot of enjoyment for free. And I enjoy the irony every time one of the mods or admins tells us here how to avoid the ads...Tongue...and I guess the advertisers aren't so naive as to think that doesn't happen, either...

Oh well, I guess it isn't the end of civilisation as we know it, gotta keep a sense of proportion...if it has to stay, we'll get used to it....until we're forced to rebrand as GoogleProgGoogleArchives.com (brought to you by those nice people at - what was their name again?)

If you look hard enough you can always either find a standalone version of the player or uncheck the option to install the search engine browser bar.

As an alternative you can download the player with the annoying search bar then uninstall the search bar afterwards.................

Quicktime (Apple) wants you to download I-tunes with the player but there is a standalone version:

http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/standalone.html

Also you can download K-Lite and its media player as a substitute for Real player and/or Qucktime. Its available for FREE here:

It's all about Real Alternative; especially since the official Real player contains something that looks very much like spyware!

I was discussing this issue with Ghost Rider yesterday while checking our band's list for this week and it's ridiculous all the noise made about it.

I honestly liked more the old system, but it's just a matter of getting used to, everything in life is change and if Google gives us a more complete research about a determined band, the change must be welcomed, in two or three days nobody will ever remember there was once another system.

Now to the economic issue, I don't know if the owners gain money with this and I absolutely don't care, by the contrary I would he happier if I know this effort of providing us a FREE site is being rewarded, I wish they could gain money because this would make the site grow and there's nothing that would please me more.

So don't be cheap guys, Prog Archives is my refugee after a day in real life and the only way the owners can pay for this service (Server costs BTW) is if it's at least remotely profitable, so if you and I want Prog Archives to survive, don't complain about minor things as a simple search system and thank God we have one, a lot of good Prog places don't have a search button as we do and members have to do a manual search letter by letter and then dig in a list of bands that start with a determined letter.

Remember, M@X and Prog Lucky took the risk of making a good site and in a few years we are the pride of all Google, the N° 1 site and this means something to all of us who feel part of it.

I rather like the new facility. It offers a much more powerful search within the site than we had before.

For example, it will allow you to search for a band member, and see all the entries they are mentioned in. Also, individual tracks can now be found.

I was little surprised that it's now google. It's a bit better, but also worse. I'm not complaining. But what can it do to bands who aren't so popular? Good is that it allows you to dispell.
I liked the appearance of old "machine".

But even better would be if gogle was here, in THE search:
http://www.progarchives.com/forum/search_form.asp?FID=0

BTW have you noticed there's now some ad, or pop-uo sh*t, which tries to get you "fix" your computer or something. I don't remember what it is exactly, but it makes me close the window. I don't like it. (Viruses?? help) Well, i don't need help but this site does.

But if I wanted a more complete research I'd surf to google myself! I don't want that; I want a progarchives search. I have never seen a website that only has a google search engine before... Confused

What exactly do you mean? What does this mean in effect? Is the ProgArchives search tool coming back, next to the google search tool, or is it going to stay like this?

What I know is that it takes about four times more time to find the band you're looking for.

The problem is that to Google all web pages are the same - just a collection of words which are indexed. So it doesn't know whether a page is a forum thread, band page, album page etc..
