Geddy Lee ! Difficult to answer, but I believe that Geddy Lee is better (only think that he plays bass, synths and sings along )
I really admire him.

WHAT???? As a bass player it is much EASIER to play with my fingers than using a pick. Besides, have you ever seen geddy use his fingers, it's like he as a hook! Why is it better to use you fingers anyway?

I personally am better (a LOT better) with a pick than with fingers. I prefer the attack of a pick anyway. It's really just a matter of personal preference.

Geddy Lee, and yes, I play bass. Chris Squire is good, but very overrated by Progheads.

hmmmm... that merits an explanation.... you're only talking about the
man who definied prog bass hahahha and gave Tony Levin ulsers or cancer
or something when faced when he had to learn his parts
do please explain why you think he's overrated Phileas.. my curiousity is aroused hahaha

I think basses sound better, more full when played with fingers. Picks sound too sharp to me.

in a guitar it's more difficult to play "ostinato" (probably because of the thinness of the strings)... but on bass it seems a bit easier.... still I think that is more difficult to "shred" with the fingers than with a pick

Is this a serious question ? Squire is simply in a different class. A true musician.

Much like the "who's the better drummer in this picture" thread (Portonoy vs. Bruford), both are great! Among the very best!
I voted for Squire by a whisker, i think he has an innate sense for when to syncopate a rhythm rather than hitting a note right on the downbeat (example, the bass in Wonerous Stories), even geddy is quoted as saying "Chris Squire Rules!" and cites him as a primary influence.....
But like I said on the previously mentioned thread, I see the top of the mountai as more of a plateau rather than a sharp peak, both of them are up there with Tony Levin, Stu Hamm, Billy Sheehan, Scott Thunes, Steve Harris, John Paul Jones, John Entwhistle, Paul McCartney & others.....

Hmmm. I can't see anything incredibly amazing in Chris Squire's playing. Can someone give me individual tracks to listen closer to? ( |
