I went with In Earnest, a simply stunning song.
However, if you had put in Transatlantics All of the Above then I would have voted for that.

Mind you that I haven't heard all of these bands. ![Wink Wink](smileys/smiley2.gif)

Apparently you have, because you put Transatlantic's Duel with the Devil in your poll. That's on the same album and everything. Or are you saying something else? Like you just don't know which of theirs is best because you haven't listened to any of it? Hm. Anyways.
Sleeping in Traffic by Beardfish has not gotten any votes but really needs attention. That band's last two albums have been works of sheer or almost sheer genius. Do not pass up the chance to listen to them.
| I can attest that I've not heard a single note of Transatlantic. I've heard of them, but I've not heard them. That's the main reason they're here.

Well, you folks are certainly piquing my interest in "Octavarium," which is kind of weird. The only Dream Theater I've ever gotten into is Metropolis II: Scenes From a Memory.
And "the epic to end all epics?" Now I've got to check out Transatlantic.

Difficult. I went for Octavarium. I really like it, one of my favourite from Dream Theater.

I don't have National Health's, and that alone is enough to sop me from voting. Otherwise, I would very happily vote for KA III. |
I tried ordering Playtime recently, but the seller was out of stock and I forgot to reorder from someone else.
Anyway, the only thing that bugs me a little is that while the CD was released in 2001, the material is from concerts performed in 1979. Not sure if this counts for what I think the OP was going for, e.g. modern "epics".

I was thinking the same thing.

Most I haven't heard of (and no DT!!!). Anyway, I love Duel With The Devil (but Stranger in Your Soul is better), but Great Nothing is the best from the list. One of the best (if not the best) song by SB ever.

IQ already has 8 votes , I would of went with it but when I saw the Gourishankar with a goose egg, the bile rose and the mustard as well (as the french say) and had to give them a nod. Such a good album too

You picked some great epics here my friend although you missed out on the very best: The Odessey-Symphony X (2002).
From the list I picked Monsters & Men (TFK) and it's a disgrace it gets so few votes. I think nobody really LISTENS to this song. Along with my mentioned SX song it's really one of the very very best compositions ever !! Give it a try if you never heard it (it's on Paradox Hotel). You will not be disappointed, a recommendation to all.
Other great epics are of course Octavarium, Great Nothing, Anesthetize, Behind the great Beyond and most of all In Earnest. Like I said: great list !
