Oh and by the way, it's my sad duty to inform you there's been a four foot restriction in humanoid height.
Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

Nice Approve One of my all time favourite singles - and those 60s Burns Bison guitars are soooo nice.

More of a percussionist, but Sue Hadjopoulos:
OK I should take that back:
Dual drummer arrangement so not enough focus on Sue.

Smile Legend has it, there was at least one female drummer, as far back as the Napoleonic wars:

Female Drummer
(as recorded by Steeleye Span, 1971)

I was brought up in Yorkshire and when I was sixteen
I walked all the way to London and a soldier I became

cho:    With me fine cap and feathers, likewise me rattling drum
They learned me to play upon the ra-ba-da-ba-dum
With me gentle waist so slender, me fingers long and small
I could play upon the ra-ba-dum the best of them all

And so many were the pranks that I saw upon the breech
And so boldly did I fight me boys although I'm but a wench
And they buttoned then up me trousers so up to them I smiled
To think I'd live with a thousand men and a maiden all the while

And they never found my secret out until this very hour
When they sent me out to London to be sentry at the Tower
When a young girl fell in love with me and she found that I's a maid
She went out to me officer me secret she betrayed
He unbuttoned then my red uniform and he found that it was true
"It's a shame", he says "to lose a pretty drummer boy like you"
So now I must return to me mum and dad at home
And along with me old comrades no longer can I roam

Seriously, re the relative dearth of the fairer sex behind the skins, perhaps it's because girls don't usually like to hit, but wound with words -- they have many more singers! Wink

Actually seriously, thinking about it: likely societal/cultural AND biological factors are at work. (See also explorers, philosophers and mathematicians....) Individuals are individuals, but broadly speaking, the sexes are different. That's okay, no? Ermm
"And, has thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!'
He chortled in his joy.

You should read "Monstrous Regiment" by Terry Pratchett, in which a woman joins the army to look for her brother. She joins a recruiting party led by an old sergeant, and one by one all new recruits turn out to be women. who joined the army for various reasons. When they are finally admit to being women they get into trouble because they have been more successful in battle than the rest of the army, and they even have to face a court martial. But it turns out that about half the officers at the court martial are women  too, and even the old and famous sergeant who is feared for his skills in battle turns out to be a woman.

Smile Sounds like a hoot!
I shoukld read some Pratchett some day -- I know my pal Jim is a big fan....

Ever read Ursula K. LeGuin's "The Left Hand of Darkness"? Great sci fi, which deals with the issue of gender, and the assumptions we have built around it. (For those unfamilar with the plot, an earthman is on a world where the people regularly, biologigally and naturally change gender -- thus a father can also be a mother, a "macho" soldier can also be a loving, nurturing mother, etc.) A classic, by one of America's best writers -- any genre, any gender. Thumbs Up

What ?
I mean, it's a confusing statement: what do you mean ? What role are the "biological factors" playing in this story about explorers, philosophers and mathematicians?

If the sexes are different (next time I checked, I could see a noticeable difference between what men have in their own trousers and what women have in their own trousers), it... Er, yeah, I guess it's okay, but... No, frankly, what do you mean??? ConfusedConfusedConfusedConfusedConfused
