The songwriting doesn't matter. After all, this is "Top 10 Favorite Progressive Rock Guitarists", not "Top 10 Favorite Progressive Rock Songwriters Who Also Play Guitar". It's another thing if they write and play a lot of awesome guitar licks, but the actual writing of songs says nothing about their guitar playing capabilities.

Here is my top 10... Though I am constantly changing my mind. But Andy Latimer is awesome and in my opinion so underrated. There are few guitarist that can write a really good melodic guitar solo these days.

1. Andy Latimer (Camel)
2. John Petrucci (Dream Theater)
3. David Gilmour (Pink Floyd)
4. Mikel Akerfeldt (Opeth)
5. Steve Howe (Yes)
6. Steve Rothery (Marillion)
7. Robert Fripp (King Crimson)
8. John McLaughlin (Mahavishnu Orchestra)
9. Matt Bellemy (Muse)
10. Martin Barre (Jethro Tull)

👊

1) John Petrucci
2) Mike Holmes
3) John Mitchell
4) Steve Rothery
5) David Gilmour
6) Chris Degarmo
7) Jim Matheos
8) Adrain Smith
9) Jeff Clayton
10) Max Cavalera

Please note that this is in no particular order cause that would be ridiculously hard. 😢

This could be fiercely debated, but I haven't the time nor the energy to debate it. There are better players than Petrucci (not Petrucchi). I mean especially if were to look into the jazz and classical genres. You, sir, need to go home.

Damn, you love to hate ^^

^^ yeah yeah I know. Of course this can be fiercely debated cause I'm wrong to universalize Petrucci as the best guitarist in the world. I've heard a few others that are 'better improvisational guitar players' but Petrucci is very very good. Not the best...then again the best can only be relegated to a personal opinion only.
He still gets top honors for me.

....I'm going home now.
