Selling England was my favorite Genesis album as a teen for a few years,
but I think after I got over the level of great musicianship
(esp. Rutherford on that album), I didn't come back to so much.  Foxtrot still has
Watcher and Time Table, and the great ending of Supper's Ready will always be
listenable.

Imo, The Battle of Epping Forest is a great tune. One of their most complex songs, Gabriel Era. The whole band gave their best. These lyrics written by a true story & Gabriel's theatrical singing, Collins' drumming is fantastic, Banks' solos at 3:13 and 8:45 stagger my mind now as well as a hundred of years ago, Rutheford's bass lines & Hacketts' guitar work at 5:28 - 6:40 is a magnificent soundtrack of that moving poetry. Masterpiece.

Battle Of Epping Forest gets boring for me after 2 minutes. ''Its The Battle Of Epping Forest'' zzzzz. All the overdone cockney and silly Carry On Up The Vicarage voices , and people moan about Benny The Bouncer which at least is only 2 minutes and doesn't outstay its welcome. I obviously missed all those wonderful solos. Thats not the only reason why I think this album  is way overrated on a scale not unlike DSOTM. The horrible bland production , pop music like In You Wardrobe that gets boring very quickly  and More Fool Me not fooling anyone. Of course there are the trio of great epic  tracks that stops this album dying completely on its arse but I would rarher listen to the live version of Cinema Show any day over the limp studio version. Only DWTMK and FOF are 'keepers' in my book.

Foxtrot I love from start to finish and only ATOTT betters it as far as Genesis is concerned (imo)

I don't share the enthusiasm for Foxtrot, Selling England is my favorite Genesis album.

After two disastrous produced albums Nursery Cryme and Foxtrot (by the way, do not forget that the Trespass original LP randomly get its amazing, 'moody' sound) that "horrible bland production" was a really fresh air.

I agree re; TBOEF, but I thought the production job was probably the best of the Gabriel era.

It's just a shame they didn't find Dave Hentschel in those early years.

I cannot understand all the hype about poor production in the 70's. We played vinyl for God's sake!

We just discuss. Well, it was not a matter of vinyl, it was a matter of poor production; there were already a number of well produced prog albums at the time of Nursery Cryme and Foxtrot releases, whose production was a disaster. Although their music was magnificent and quality was recognized and well accepted, it's a fact that Genesis did not have a well produced album until Live release in summer 1973. Aside of Trespass the original album that accidently sounds great.

Both superb albums, but 2 things decided this for me.

1 - Foxtrot has my favorite Gabriel era song (Can-Utility & The Coastliners) & doesn't have a down moment in all its 46 minutes

2 - Selling England has the execrable Battle Of Epping Forest (just as well the rest of the album is faultless IMO)

When I started to listen Genesis, Selling England was first album I heard and the best thing I coulld had ever heard, warm, very symphonic and pretty accessible.

But then I got the whole collection and discovered the firrst three Prog albums (Trespass, NC and Foxtrot).

Wow, that thick atmospheric sound and dark mood captured me, the interplay between Hackett and Banks was just perfect, the albums were obscure, mysterious, simply magic, and by Selling England, that magic was lost.

Yes, SEBTP has Cinema Show, Dancing with the moonlit Knight and Battle for the Epiong Forest, but it also has More Fool Me and the worst version of I Know What I like, it's still a masterpiece, but I stay with Foxtrot,a perfect album with no weak tracks or fillers.

My order is:

  1. Foxtrot
  2. Nursery Cryme
  3. Trespass
  4. The Lamb Lies Down
  5. Selling England
  6. W & W
  7. A Trick
And I can't care less for the rest.

Iván

Interesting order of Genesis faves......
but you failed to mention Firth of Fifth from SEBTP which imho is one of the best songs they ever wrote.

Nursery Cryme has been largely 'fixed' now but admittedly was a bit muddy soundwise. Foxtrot is a long way from being disastrous , its just a bit rough and ready but that's never bothered me.

Dancing, Firth, Battle and Cinema. The only track from Foxtrot to rival these four of Genesis' most brilliant pieces is Supper's Ready, IMO, so Selling for me.

^You don't like Can-Utility and the Coastliners Audun? That's without a doubt my favourite track off Foxtrot. An epic with all the pomp and imaginative turnovers delivered in just under 6 minutes.

Yeah I agree with that. Selling features some of their best tracks too, but there are a couple that aren´t up to par with those great ones on the album too, and that makes it short of perfect. Not that it affects my 5 star rating

I absolutely adore that track too. The closing minute is pure heaven...
