Ah Defenders of the Faith, one of the albums that really got me into heavy metal. My first Judas Priest album, and still my fav.

Listened to (and yes, Yoko played into my listening as well!):

Frank Zappa - Absolutely Free: I've always been more of a side 1 fan than side 2. That Invocation jammmin' is so damn sweet, just a killer groove to roll over with some solo oomph. And the Duke tunes...I'm just so there man. Not that side 2 is bad or anything. Hell, America Drinks is some kind of forward thinking lunacy, but I'll take the jams over the Brown Shoes these days.

Frank Zappa - Hot Rats: This is great stuff to play in traffic. Seriously. Killer musicianship keeps me alert and aware, but it's not too insane, outrageous or aggressive that I start losing my cool. It hits that elusive spot in which it needs to be heard and yet doesn't intrude on me doing what I have to do.

Yoko Ono - Approximate Infinite Universe: I now have this on white vinyl, with some cute artsy stuff thrown in. The upbeat numbers like "What Did I do?" and "Kite Song" rule so damn hard, but I'm okay with the mellower stuff these days despite her warble. "I Want My Love to Rest Tonight" is total cringe, but hearing J. Lennon's backing vocals somehow makes it all good. Get some rest John!

Frank Zappa - One Size Fits All: Geez. What can I say about this one? Musically off the chain, jazz-rock heaven. Hell, there's some quality vocals at times to boot. Not lyrically obnoxious either. "Andy" just rips out this groove at certain points.

Twice - Fancy You: The latest by one of the Kpop GG biggies. I tried, but outside of maybe "Turn it Up", it just isn't jivin'. No thanks. But after it finished, Spotify went into Pandora-mode and played "Loonatic" by Loona Odd Eye Circle, and that was what I needed. What a stoned-out stomper that song is.

Francoise Hardy - Ma Jeunesse Fout L'Camp: One of the big 60's French ye-ye babes. She's more on the atmospheric somber ballad side of things rather than the perky stuff, but Francoise really does own that stuff better than anyone. Walking alone in Paris at night by the streetlights...this album in a nutshell.

Frank Zappa - Over-Nite Sensation: Good music, but some of the lyrics don't work for me. "Montana" has the lyrics I dig though. Too good. Still, need a break from Zappa for a bit.

Weyes Blood - Titanic Rising: Highest rated album on RYM for this year so far, and damn I think it's cool. Ever wondered what a collaboration between The Carpenters and George Harrison circa All Things Must Pass would sound like? Me neither, but "Andromeda" brings it, and it's pretty damn sweet!

Malevolent Creation - Dead Man's Path: The last album with Brett Hoffmann on vocals before he dies of cancer. He seems rather mad, which makes a lot of sense, and the band tears it up to comply with his mortal rage. An early death metal band I haven't bothered with since the early 90's, and wow, this 2015 release is quite good for what it is.

Malevolent Creation - The 13th Beast: Their latest, with a new (living) vocalist, and dunno, I go bored. Mostly a whole new band except for one guitarist; not seeing the point of keeping the name at this point except for the name itself I suppose. Well, Napalm Death still chugs along with no original members left, so I guess if fans don't mind...

Weyes Blood - Front Row Seat to Earth: After hearing her newest, I had to check out her earlier stuff. Her voice is so warm, natural and vibrant. Quite the gift. Plus she's got some gorgeous melodies to espouse. I'm a fan at this point...must buy her vinyls now...

Jenny Lewis - On the Line: With an album cover like that, of course I'm going to check it out! Still, I turned fifty recently, thus I'm getting this "Hey he's an old creep now!" conscience deal wafting in which I try to blow away. Stupid "life stuff" trying to mess with my life-long passions. Life can be so annoying at times. But hey, if I'm a creep for admiring that cover, than so be it. Nice use of shadow.

Yes, it’s a really really strange sounding album too partly because of that. Like if Blackdance had tried to be a psychedelic hard rock album. Nothing else like it.

And this brings me up to date.

Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band | Stranger in Town — an old staple from my boyhood days, and the only acceptable CD in my dad’s car as we took a quick trip vinyl shopping. Really good album in fact. Several big hits. “Feel Like a Number” is my favorite though. Just a raging rocker that really inspires.

Canned Heat | Future Blues — back at my pad with the parents, some eclectic blues

Chicago | III — and the instrumental side 4 of this beauty

Amon Duul II | Wolf City — and this groovy well-rounded German nugget

Swans | World of Skin — later, on my own. Hadn’t really heard this one much yet but I need to further explore the more folky side of Swans

Chicago | At Carnegie Hall Vol 1-4 — finally bought this. disc 1 just rips. Terry Kath can take 10 minute solos all night long as far as I’m concerned. He was one of the best in the business.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor | Yanqui UXO — maybe the ultimate “sad” album I have. Just heartbreaking

This Kind of Punishment | s/t — early 80s spare experimental rock from New Zealand. Contains different combinations of vocals, piano, guitar, bass, and drums, but rarely all together. Introspective and kinda dark.

Arthur Brown’s Kingdom Come | Jam — semi-official studio jam as Brown was recruiting people for a new band after The Crazy World of Arthur Brown folded. Nothing special but good for an occasional listen.

Swans | Children of God — usually considered their first classic album. Not sure of that but it’s pretty great

Yeah, it came out a month ago and already has 89 reviews. This thing has major momentum for an album beneath the commercial radar. My only issue with it is that the similar relaxed tempos over time make it hard for me to finish it, but there's so many good songs on this thing. I started to listen to one of her early albums "The Innocents", and I'm thinking that one may actually be more my style...certainly more unusual.

"Feel Like a Number" is one of Bob's best. The Live Bullet version of "Katmandu" is the other one that really pumps me up, even if the lyrics are sillier.

Swans sort of had different eras for me, thus I would consider "Filth" to be a noise rock classic. "Children of God" is a monster though; a very important album of my teenage years.

KUKL - The Eye: Released on CRASS Records in 1984, this is notable stuff as not only are they Icelandic (on an anarcho-punk Brit label), but Bjork is in the group in teenage wild-girl mode. That voice is already there, but punked out a bit, less refined, to match the tribal post-punk noisy mayhem of the band. A pretty neat curiosity.

The Sugarcubes - Life's Too Good: Formed almost like a joke by KUKL members, this wound up blowing up bigtime. I know Einor gets lots of hate, but he's kinda funny here and not too intrusive in my opinion. Lots of good songs, and quite a trip down memory lane for me.

The Sugarcubes - Here Today, Tomorrow, Next Week: First listen. Okay, now Einor gets annoying, sharing vocal duties way more, and on every tune. Less catchy as well, like lots of yelling by the two singers over indie-rock soundscapes. "Water" is very pretty though. Like a safer poppy version of KUKL's stuff mixed with the Sugarcubes' sound. It actually gave me a bit of a headache.

I had all that stuff back in my Bjork-period. Enjoyed it a lot back then. Nowadays, I'm not sure. There's another project called "Gling Glo" you might want to check out....another "curiosity."

^Will do with Gling-Glo. I never knew anything about KUKL until a couple of days ago, so yeah, really perusing Bjork's pre-solo debut days.

The Sugarcubes - Stick Around for Joy: Much better than their previous album, which I could barely handle, with improved musicianship as well. The rhythm section is very good. Einar doesn't annoy as much, though he almost ruins "Hetero Scum", which is one of the best Bjork vocals I've ever heard. Total fire on that one. This release is about on par with the debut, or pretty close.

Joni Mitchell | Blue
Joni Mitchell | Ladies of the Canyon — these two hadn’t really hit home before, but they did this time.

Jandek | Glasgow Friday
Nihilist Spasm Band | 7x~x=x — an atonal pair of noisy things. palate cleanser

The Ex | Joggers and Smoggers — Early release from Dutch avant-rock legends

Frank Zappa | Ship Arriving too Late to Save a Drowning Witch — maybe his best 80s album?

Magma | Attakh — one of my favorite studio albums by them. They cleanse my soul

Harvey Milk | Courtesy and Good Will Toward Men — long time since I heard this. Takes some getting used to but this is brutal

Sonic Youth | Sonic Death: Early Live Sonic — also brutal, albeit very lo-fi. Sounds like a deranged set of wind chimes sometimes

This Kind of Punishment | In the Same Room — final album from early 80s experimental art rock (or is it post punk? almost seems too quiet to be either. Sounds like an alternate universe Eno/Cale album, come to think of it)

i was just reading up on them, looks promising! Had you posted about them before? My memory is shot.

Also, re a post of yours from the top of this page, I recently got Defenders of the Faith in its deluxe CD edition, which features an excellent live show from that tour. I’m not a Priest fanatic by any means, but that’s one of the albums I go back with a ways.
