No, their own know that they are full of sh*t but it served their purpose. Remember, Republicans now see themselves as the forgotten minority in America being passed over by the radical left and soon to be left behind, so all's fair as far as they're concerned.

I would agree they see themselves as Patriots, but not in any understanding of the word that we would recognise. They're patriotic for 'their' America, which is largely a construct of their imaginations.

The bottom line is this. If anyone thinks that the Republican party will change, improve or get weak and die is doing so out of wishful thinking, or because they haven't been paying attention for the last 20 years.

Times have changed recently; there have been "incidents". The GOP will have to take position about these "incidents". And if they rather decide to sit on the fence about them it will hurt them badly.

Like what? They will give Trump another pass in this impeachment and the base will love them for it. Everything is the same except that Trump is not office. And the few Republicans that vote to impeach him will be branded as traitors to the party and will be ostracized.

Maybe historically, but in the short term this is exactly what the party wants to be and their voters are totally on board.

I definitely disagree. I have seen many comments from Trump followers who after Jan 6th said "This went too far". And these people, though certainly a minority among the 74 million, nevertheless constitute a significant part of the Trump voters. It would be asinine if the Reps still went with Trump.
But I agree with Jean that there are many Reps who are asinine. So they will still follow him who must not be named.

What I'm concerned about is not the 75 odd million who voted for Trump, that base will diminish somewhat over time. No, it's the roughly 25% of voters who think the storming of the Capitol was fine.

Not sure how many here are Colbert fans, but for the last few months (since the calling of the election I think) he has refused to print his name in any of the pop-ups, presenting it as T**** instead. I'm not sure if he's actually said his name or just used "The Former President". A mini cancel culture I guess.

that more than 70% think that the election was stolen should concern you too.

Only 5 Republicans even voted to allow the trial. Lindsey Graham has already written a letter to Biden saying the impeachment was too divisive. Republicans are experts at pivoting the blame right back to the Dems and they have a base that will eat up these pivots and keep right on voting.

Yes, the same hypocritical BS as when Trump was president. As I've said numerous times, little has or will change with the Rs.

Quote of the Day.
Matt Gaetz, in reference to ousting Liz Cheney
"We are in a battle for the soul of the Republican party and I intend to win it,"
Remember when they were fighting for the soul of the nation, now the soul of the party. When do you think they'll start fighting for their own souls?

I remember writing in this thread like a year or so ago and been labeled a Russian troll or the sort. I mean, I am old enough to remember the ending of Perestroika years in the USSR and the first post-Soviet years in the former Soviet Union. People in our lands massively believed that democratic elections would really bring the best to the summit of power, and the worthiest one gains the throne - certainly, unlike the Soviet years where it was one guy till his very end. In reality, though, after the 1990s held in total poverty, after two so-called Maidan's in Ukraine (actually, maidan is a Ukrainian word that simply means "city square") in 2004 and 2014 most of Ukrainians ceased to believe in protests, revolutions, kind'n'sincere politicians... Because they have seen that all of the politicians are made from more or less the same type of dough.
And I used to look at the foreign politicians in the same manner. Although, perhaps, I don't understand something in the given topic. And should better stay away.
