Anybody remember that one that got radio airplay back in the early '70s called, I believe, D.O.A.?[?] It had the lyric, "We were flying high, and we hit something in the air." Really, does anyone remember it?

Saga – Humble Stance. The narrator is such an insensitive,
coldhearted, world-class d*ckhead that you just want to slap him silly. He’s describing this woman’s lack of
assertiveness and social anxiety, but does he give her any encouragement or
support? No, he finds it easier to
lambaste her and rake her over the coals and sneer that no one is going to help
her, as if he genuinely believes she’s that way because she wants to be.
But I suppose his being a d*ckhead is the point of the song, like in a lot of Randy Newman’s work, where he
narrates from the perspective of characters that aren’t always the most
enlightened or scrupulous.

Can't remember the name of the track. Its on All the Pretty Little Horses by Current 93 if they are considered prog? Come to think of it, all of the album is quite disturbing.

Actually, the most disturbing prog song I heard was either "Flick of the Wrist" by Dream Theater or "Never Enough" by Dream Theater.

No, but I remember that song by Weetus - Pushing Up The Daisies (or some such). Now that was bloody disturbing............(sounded like a 4 y.o. at the mic.)

King Crimson - Red
just a very daunting, uneasy, anxious, menacing piece of music. the classical bit in the middle with a cello(?) ramps up the tension as well. the soundtrack to some kind of armageddon

yeah.. DT has their fair share of disturbing stuff.
I'll never forget the first time my wife played me the Once of a Livetime album ... I was genuinely disturbed and shocked to hear just how bad a vocalist could be on.. oh what was it.. oh yes.. Take the Time. That has to rank up there high up on the list of most distrubing prog songs I've heard.

Sound chaser is anti-thesis to Prog but I mention it here because it is generally described "prog". It sucks big time, even compared to Ian Gillan with Black Sabbath (grin)
You may see a smile on Tony Banks´ face but that´s unlikely.

What a well-written entry. Anywho, I'd hate to see your Top 10 best prog songs list because I sense at least half of them would blow considering your offbeat impression of Sound Chaser.
