One of my favourites! if not my very favourite! Peter Hammill's Vocal skils are unmatched, and the bands compositional skills are amazing! Sure they may not be virtuosos but they definitely know their instruments and how to compose an amazing song. Listen to sleepwalkers and tell me that VdGG is not one of the most amazing bands to ever create music!

I dislike whisky Snowdog and will only drink it as a last resort I've drunk it in Blackpool, drunk it Bournemouth Saw Stevie Vai last year along with Satriani and almost walked out due to the virtuoso tedium.

I must disagree with you there. What about Ian Anderson?

Surely you jest.

Ian Anderson puts forth a noble effort, I've been a fan for 35 years.

However...

His lyrical impact is much more reliant on his singing delivery.

And Cliver Bunker was the best Tull drummer.

Hands down.

Just letting you know.

I jest not! Anderson is hands down my favourite lyricist of all time. A dab hand with the metaphor, a razor sharp wit underpinning a sympathetic soul and an ability to spin the most mundane of events into something profound. His lyrics are memorable, literate, clever, humourous, touching, thought-provoking and poetic. I'll take them over Hammil's melodramatic scrawlings any day.

Edit: Oh, and this is a little off topic but I must point out that your website's gorgeous.

For some strange reason, I always get a sickly feeling when I listen to Hammill's voice. Reminds me of 'The Excorcist' movie!!!

Give it time ... there's no hurry. My favorite is currently H to He, I find it quite accessible. I only know single songs of their other albums though.

When I was discovering VDGG, then I didn't really liked them at all. Listened to it few times and, like Snow Dog, thought it was dull, boring etc. So I stopped to listen to it.
After about week or two I tried once again, and was immediately blown away by the album 'Pawn Hearts'.
I advise everyone who wants to get into VDGG to do the same.

yep.  I'm one of the rare people though who prefers Collins to Gabriel as a vocalist.

I always felt Gabriel was dramatic, Hammill over the top with it.

Umm, you must not like theatre, the movies, acting, or opera.

After all this I still feel that people are not giving VDGG the credit they deserve. Many of you while seeing that the bands writes great music, still insist that the band individually are not very skilled players. They are not as FLASHY as Keith Emerson but that certainly does not mean that they are not well established and accomplished musicians. Perhaps many of you are not aware of just how COMPLEX their music is, and what it takes to play music like that. They play in very very complex time meters, displacing the beat like it was natural. And once again, brilliant composition on top of all that makes for an exciting band!!!

Very condescending of you Proglover, but that not why I've revived this thread!

After now hearing Godbluff and Pawn hearts, I reckon I'm a fan.......now what's next!

Hey, I missed a VdGG thread. Never mind, I didn't have anything to add, except: great band, both live as well as on record. Great vocalist, Peter Hammill. Well, that's my little contribution to the thread  .

Interesting thread,

I only have two... H to He and Pawn Hearts.  Not exactly a fav group but like them enough to order last week  the remaster of "The Least We Can Do.....'  I'm sure I'll like it like the others.

I just received Pawn Hearts a couple weeks ago, and thought it was fantastic.  So had to order H to He, Godbluff, and Vital...just got them a few days ago and have only listened to H to He so far...also great.  I think Hamill is a great vocalist and the musicianship is top-notch.  Have The Least We Can Do... on order now too.

Just noticed on the Opeth forum a couple nights ago that Mike Akerfeldt's playlist for September 2005 included Pawn Hearts.  Mike is not only a great musician and performer, but he also has great taste in music

I'm listening to some VDGG right now. I've gotten into them recently but I totally plan to buy "The Least we can do.." "H to He..." "Godbluff" and "Pawn Hearts" if I can find them.

By the way: Snow Dog, your avatar is awesome.
