^ It's a bit naive though. No new music finds you if you just sit on the sofa and do nothing. It's always an active process, in his case frequenting places where you get exposed to (people discussing) new music.

^ I was speaking somewhat figuratively, though. It means that I'm not really looking for new music and don't do the things that people who are actually seeking new music do. It means that I might spend months without getting any new music. And I'm not even sampling new music unless there is some expectation of maybe getting it. It is a different mindset to those who are seeking new music or sampling lots of different music.

No, I know how to behave in the restaurant now, I don't tear at the meat with my hands. If I've become a man of the world somehow, that's not necessarily to say I'm a worldly man.

...
Hi,

I learned in school/university a lesson that came from Castaneda. And it is basic physics. "Quality is inversely proportional to quantity" ... very simple. This was massive for "actors" in our theater program, learning to find a better, and less intrusive time in order to learn their lines for a scene, or a play.

Taking this further, it taught me to LISTEN ... and that meant that I could hear it just once IN ITS ENTIRETY (not just needle and peck!) ... and learn/read what the sleeve said and look at the lyrics if available. I rarely had to listen to any album a 2nd or 3rd time, unless it was one of those ... wow albums ... AD2's Wolf City got worn out on the turntable and I had to get a 2nd copy!

Listening "repeatedly" for me, is, often, counter productive, IF, we are "not sure" what we want to hear, or what we are "expecting" to hear, since it will only help spread those out even further. IF, that happens to me, I sit the album down for a week or two and listen to it later, although I can not even tell you which album that happened to for me in 40 plus years. Actually there was one, and it was Tangerine Dream when I got introduced to "Mysterious Semblance ... " and it scared me and I went back to my headphones and listen to Hawkwind! And it took me 2 days, before I could listen to it again, and since then, it is by very far one of the prettiest things I have ever heard in my life, right next to Fairport Convention's Reynardine with the incredible voice of Sandy Denny.

In the end, for me, it is about staying tuned (sorry radio term), and making sure you can hear it ... and when you do, it normally sets in, unless you do what I call the cardinal sin of listening ...immediately you go "this sounds like ELP", or "this sounds like Ruckamuck", and right away you lose the ability to objectively decipher and interpret the music you are "listening", which in plain terms, it would be considered, not listening, since your attention is side tracked from the music itself.

But there are things that take me a while to get into ... weirdly enough, it took me 3 seconds and Peter Hammill/VdGG were ready for me, but it took me over a year for Gentle Giant to sync in until I found the incredible musicianship involved and their playful ability with it. For me, few bands, have that kind of musical talent that GG showed ... specially with really difficult material instead of the simplistic one note, or one riff sounding and formatted music that we listen to these days!

Hi,

It's meant more as a challenge than an insult. A musician that thinks that he can no longer learn anything, is not an artist, for the most part. He/She has lost that "spark" that helps create and illustrate the inspiration for what you can do.

It reminds me of a tennis player that kept beating his son left and right ... and when asked he finally said, when is he going to want to beat me, then? And it's true ... a lot of it depends on your ability to learn and improve and get better ... and a format, or a riff, is way too simple in music history for anyone to (probably) learn a lot more about music and what can be done with it. AND, this is one of the MOST IMPORTANT THINGS, that helped create what we call "progressive music" ...
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

^ Can you give me some examples - which musicians do you mean? Let's put some names to this image of a non-artist, incapable of learning.

Hi,

I lived in a house with a band for many months (early 1980's), and they were fair to better musicians, and were creating what was (basically) a very progressive piece of music, slightly inspired by "The Wall". I, had, by then, already over 2500 LP's and some 400 hours of Space Pirate Radio shows on tape ... in general, the folks in the band didn't mind the comments, but never acted on them, and while I can not say that it might have helped them with my comments, although I thought, and still think a wee bit, that my listening ability and insane variety (they saw all the albums over there!), was about making comments that were musically inclined, or at least within the scope of a composition, however, already at that time, the whole thing was about "song" and they preferred to keep their music in splashes of wonderful material that was (essentially) wasted.

You don't listen to that much DIFFERENT music and not learn something!

The folks were two brothers (named Payne), and a couple of others, one of whom I worked with in a bakery, and he was the bass player (Mike) and main composer. This band did OK in the Santa Barbara/Ventura areas and got a lot of attention, but I think their "focus" was that there was a massive difference in their make up chemistry that hurt ... one guitarist was fairly good, but undisciplined, the other guitarist was too disciplined, and a sort of studio player, and his wife also played the bass, fairly well in another band, that also got attention.

Later, up here in Portland/Vancouver (USA, Oregon/Washington border), I spent time taking pictures with a couple of bands, and went up around the West Coast with GONG, and have on tape some conversations with Daevid Allen, who agreed with me that there was a general problem with many musicians about being open to doing different things, but he hoped that the band GONG showed that they all had a very strong input to what the band was about, which was still very much Daevid, but musically, it was all of them since Daevid was very different on his own solo albums. Those reviews will never be released, as I feel they were too personal, and some folks might not like it. But I certainly would not think, and Daevid saw my collection and commented on the incredible diversity of it, that he was not being honest ... if there was one thing, it was that Daevid was very open and a very "together" person, that pretty much gave his life to the muse of the word and the music.

I am not sure, that most folks have picked up so much from a literary house, and then an artistic chance, to be able to make some comments ... the difference in the quality of the design of the "progressive" music is clear ... I'm a progressive and stand up for the freedom and the experimentation, but in my eyes, you are a very modern listener, that might have heard a lot of the older music, but my wonder is if the attention to what the music is, and does, took effect ... since a lot of your comments seem to doubt the veracity of the philosophy, or ideals that created "progressive music" for which you think name dropping is more important.

I can name for you over 100 of them, up to and including some literary giants, and it won't make a wee bit of difference to you or anyone else here ... you don't EXPERIENCE all that and learn nothing from it, and I have systematically always written about them here, as an illustration that the world of the "higher arts" (for lack of a better term, sorry!), is indeed a very special place that is not about the sales numbers, or the "fame", like things are here to some extent.

Doesn't make me right, or wrong, any more than you, but name dropping is for the folks that can't see much of anything in my book ... in my "sights" the only ones that "doubt" are the ones that do not know which path to take, left or right, or which voice is true ... and it is safe to joke that only the Fool knows!

Everything, from school, to college, to University and to my record and music collection, and my love for film adds up beautifully ... it is all about the "same thing" ... the discovery of the new light, or the new words or the new universe ... and its desire, and ability to be as clear as possible about it all ... which sometimes is impossible since it all comes from an area that has a completely different language ... and so it is for "progressive music" since its inception.

^ That's all quite interesting, but you didn't answer my question. Can you please give me examples of bands releasing music in 2023 which have "the simplistic one note, or one riff sounding and formatted music"? How many releases did you listen to in order to form this opinion? I mean, there are of course such releases, and have been since the 1950s or earlier. But of the 120+ releases of 2023 I have heard so far, there isn't any that fits this description.

What do you mean by "name dropping"? Can you please explain that in two short sentences?

Hi,

Done with topic ... you are taking literally everything, and not looking at the full context. I do not count "how many" this or that I have listened to, as I'm not a robot. And the "fact" that you have heard more, does not mean a whole lot, in my book.

It's QUALITY that matters, not QUANTITY. But you are obsessed with numbers and being number 1 ... have at it ... good luck!

^ I'll just assume that you haven't actually listened to a single release of 2023. If you think that I care about who listened to the most releases, then that is only your own inferiority complex speaking. I don't care at all about that. But you were talking sh*t about musicians, and I asked you to back up your claims, and all you cared to do was to insult me. Goodbye.

^ you won't get anywhere trying to challenge him. Many have tried and given up. He knows best and we are all plebs that don't have a clue. That's it. Some of what he says is quite interesting but it comes across as stream of consciouness ramblings to me laced with the arrogance of self delusion. Apparently though we are obessed with hits and incapable of understanding the true essence of music. Fact is musicians create music their way and there are no lines that can be drawn. The invisible boundary doesn't exist. Music is just music and you are entirely allowed to create, listen and enjoy it exactly as you see fit. We have enough people telling us what to do without yet more thought police nonsense that Mosh loves to endulge in. .

I try do do brick & mortar as much as possible.  Local Montreal area stores: Sunrise Records, Archambault, Freeson Rock.  If I must use the web, then : Burning Shed, Racket Records, DGM, and as a last resort, Amazon.

That's good. However, I don't see most brick and mortar stores selling much prog especially not obscure prog or newer prog. I remember 10-20 years ago seeing placecards for The Flower Kings, Spock's Beard and a few others but these days not so much. Prog started to pop up but now it's kind of only on the internet again.

Most purchases of lesser-known and/or newer prog from Bandcamp.  I used to buy digital albums, and some CDs from Amazon, but its been a long time since I did that.

For older/well-known artists, I usually find CD's from music stores, libraries, and thrift shops.  I know I won't find specific albums I might be looking for on any given day, but over time I've been able to collect most or all of the discography of certain artists; for example: I have most of the albums from Jethro Tull, Mike Oldfield, Tori Amos, ELP, Bela Fleck, Miles Davis, but it took some time to find them all.

In terms of discovery, places like this, as well as FB groups and friends I have on the business side will turn me on to things.

In terms of purchasing, Amazon, Discogs, LaserCD, Hell's Headbangers, eBay...

I primarily look at the Greek scene because I can search more easily because of the limited releases. For the rest, I look at bandcamp, prog archives and other music sites.
I purchase from bandcamp and a local music store.
I am trying to support new bands, there are many excellent out there!
