It would be easier to list individual songs (or pieces) as masterpieces, not albums. I can't remember referring to an album as a "masterpiece", because it consists of individual songs. Selling England has at least two masterpieces, but can the album as a whole be considered a masterpiece with "More Fool Me" included? But the songs aren't even related, so why call it "one masterpiece"?
The greatest music doesn't have to be masterpieces though, in my opinion. I mean, the greatest ever punk rock song can't be called a "masterpiece" because it suggests a masterful composition rather than a more rythm and expression orientated song. An incredible blues jam wouldn't probably be called a "masterpiece" , it's not the most applicable word. So there should be a better word than "masterpiece". "Utterly brilliant" maybe..
On the other hand, a lot of things could be called utterly brilliant..

OUFFF !!! then you believe all these albums aren't Masterpieces !!!? do you want me to start counting more than 21 bands & 11 artists with more than 5 Masterpieces !!! it seems you have a very tight idea & limited knowledge regarding our Archive , if you are a musician yourself , you know what i'm talking about , sometimes rates aren't really accurate , however , my best Masterpieces in 42 years are simply excellent albums or simply good ones in your site , Lark's Tongues in Aspic & a Passion Play are the best can be done so far , Red , ITCOCC , & TAAB don't even come close to them , Tales from Topographic & Relayer are the best Masterpieces in Yes discography , and as a musician myself , i don't care if Close to the Edge was rated as #1 or not ! So , the main issue here , there was a word in my question listed above <<<< in your opinion , disregarding any musical sites >>>> have a nice day my friend Finn ! |
Not Finnforest, but being of the same mind I have to say:
Calm down. In MY opinion it is impossible for any band to have more than one or two masterpieces, because in MY OPINION the very word "Masterpiece" implies something very special and rare.
This has nothing to do with any ratings on PA or anywhere else. I was listening to prog long before the internet was invented, let alone ProgArchives.
What you seem to consider a Masterpiece is what I would call a damned fine album but not at the Masterpiece level, with a few exceptions.
So we have answered your question and paid attention to the "in your opinion" part.
|
Appreciate your answer , and time spare in writing , but you're not convincing me , maybe because you've said you're listening to Progressive long time before Internet was invented , cause if it's true , your answer must be otherwise and completely different !! |
I'm not sure what I am supposed to be convincing you of. You want something that I personally (and a few others ) believe doesn't really exist, for personal opinion reasons. I have no idea what you mean by the last sentence, it might be a language barrier. Could you explain what should be different about my answer?

I wouldn't include Soundtracks either, actually...most of it is great, but there are a couple tracks on it I don't enjoy much (the Deadlock tracks, specifically).

Hard to do... Even when it comes to a band like King Crimson, I wouldn't be able to call 5 of their albums masterpieces although I'm a huge fan. I'd say only Larks and Red are really MASTERPIECES. Maybe the first if you take into account when it was released. Same with Camel, I love early camel, but Moonmadness, although good, ain't no masterpiece. same with the self titled. I'd say Mirage and Snowgoose are, and Rain Dances would be if you ignore the aweful aweful Highway Of The Sun (hard to do since the album has 2 versions of it!) I could name several bands with 5 really good albums, but masterpieces.... 5 really good albums: Aheulchatistas - The first five Cephalic Carnage - Exploiting Dysfunctions and onwards Dillinger Escape Plan - Calculating, Ire Works, Option Paralysis, Irony..., Miss Machine (if Ire Works didn't have 3-4 tracks I don't like this could be in the masterpieces category) Hiromi uehara - All really good albums, so 8 really good, but no masterpieces Since this isn't limited to prog (anyway the title of the thread doesn't say so) one band comes very close with 4 masterpieces and a decent first album, Jedi Mind Tricks. Visions Of Ghandi, Violent By Design, Servants In Heaven Kings In Hell and Legacy Of Blood are 4 indisputable masterpieces of hip-hop. Their first album has some really good songs, but a few not so good, and the latest one has 4 awesome tracks and the rest really sucks Mahavishnu has 4 really good albums but they all have tracks i dislike Miriodor has 6, but same thing, all have tracks I dislike. Couldn't call any a full fledged masterpiece I tought Rush would be the one band with 5 masterpieces, but I can only give these 4 albums masterpiece status, although Hold Your Fire comes quite close 2112 Hemispheres Moving Pictures A Farewell To Kings Another very close band is Snowgoons. All 5 of their albums are near masterpieces, but I'd only give the nod to A Fist In The Thought and Black Snow (for those who don't know this is another hip hop group) Stevie Ray Vaughan would be the only band/person to fit the bill if we take into acount genre, meaning that while Texas Flood isn't one of my all time favorite albums, I do conciderate it a masterpiece when Blues is concerned. Same for In Step, Couldn't Stand The Weather, The Sky Is Crying and Soul To Soul I'm just getting into MAGMA right now. Heard them for over a year but I never got into it til now. Maybe once I go through their discography I'll name them the titledholders when it comes to having 5 masterpieces!

I can't think of any. Opeth has one masterpiece. Pain of Salvation and Pink Floyd have two masterpieces. Dream Theater also has only two (Train of Thought and SFaM). Ayreon has three. Who has four? I can't even think of any band that has four. And you're asking "more than 5"?
Maybe you need to reevaluate your definition of "masterpieces". (I admit I misused this word earlier too. I called "When Dream and Day Unite" a "masterpiece". That was not very bright.)

Can't think of any bands with more than five masterpieces (i.e. better than excellent).
Even Stackridge only managed five
