A-Z of East European Prog

ABSURDCUS   An Eclectic Prog band from Romania who put the "Q" in quirky, but thankfully, the lyrics are all in English - the international language of prog (and air traffic control). The Heavy Prog first album sounds like The Outlet for the band to release all of their pent-up frustrations, but their second album is a complete Post-Rock contrast, sounding like A Drop of Calm in a turbulent topographic ocean. Absurdcus reach a "T" junction with their third album, which is different again from their first two albums. It's all really quite absurd. Confused

ACTUAL MUSIC QUARTET RSM   A classically-trained foursome from Russia who make what they call "actual music", but here at Prog Archives, we call it Post-Rock. Not a bad album if you ignore the unlistenable fourth track, which is somewhat challenging for my conservative tastes. Ouch

3 stars 2007: Actual Music Quartet RSM - Actual Music Quartet RSM - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLaxF0X40F65gc1x9ApDQyCPYqd0a23jhu

THE ADEKAEM
If you've already dipped your toes into Polish Neo Prog down by the Riverside, then why not take a dive into the deep end with The Adekaem? This Polish band are led by keyboard player and vocalist Andrzej Bielas and most of the other band members have unpronounceable names too, but don't let that put you off as all of the lyrics are in English and their three superb albums are all well-Polished performances, and that's no Lie! Ermm

AERODROM
A Pop/Rock band from the former Yugoslavia before it was Balkanised in the early 1990's. Aerodrom failed to take off in the rest of Europe but they're notable for featuring Yugoslavia's answer to Bob Geldof..... "Just give us your _______ money!" Disapprove

AESTHESYS    Aesthetics concerns the principles and appreciation of beauty, and if you're in the mood for some soothing post-communist Post-Rock, then look no further than the aptly-named Russian band Aesthesys, and listen to them make beautiful music together. Hug

AFION
When I first joined Prog Archives three and a half years ago, if anyone had told me back then that I'd be listening to Macedonian folk music here one day, I would've said "You're surely 'aving me on.," but stranger things have happened since then, and so, without further ado, I present to you, Prog Folk band Afion, from the Croatian capital of Zagreb, where there's a flourishing Macedonian folk scene, apparently. Smile

AFTER CRYING    The best thing to emerge from Budapest since The Blue Danube and the second-best-known Symphonic Prog band from Hungary. Ideal music for listening to after chopping onions. Wink

AICAN    Who can rock the house down? Aican! A Heavy Prog band from Ekaterinburg deep in the heart of Russia where, if you go down to the woods today, Don't Go Deep into the Forest, as you never know who you might see riding bareback. Shocked

ALAMEDA 5    A spaced-out band from an unpronounceable town somewhere in Eastern Europe, so if you guessed this band are Polish, you guessed correctly. They're as spacy and spicy as Polish sausage, so if you like the sound of tripped-out Space Rock, then Alameda 5 are right up your galaxy.  Smile

ALBION    When it comes to East European prog, the Poles are in Pole Position, and Albion are no exception. Wow! This top-notch, female-fronted Neo Prog band sound superb, and rather surprisingly, I'm glad to say most of the lyrics are in English too (all but for one album), although maybe not so surprising with a band-name like Albion. Prepare to be amazed! I haven't handed out this many well-deserved 5-star ratings since Mostly Autumn. Tongue

Amazing band and the Jerzy Antczak solo albums are stunning as well
I never post anything anywhere without doing more than basic research, often in depth.

ALKOTRIO    A band who sound like an alcoholic threesome out on a pub crawl - if their name is anything to go by - but they're actually a Jazz Fusion trio from Moscow. Das vedanya. Smile

ALTERNATIV QUARTET    Beware of vampires, as this post-communist Post Rock band are from deepest, darkest Transylvania, but at least there's no need to fear Ceausescu and his dreaded Securitate, as this band came along twenty years after the fall of the Romanian communist regime. Alternativ Quartet came to national attention in the Stuffed Sock festival (presumably the Romanian equivalent of Pop Idol) in 2009, but they remained virtually unknown in the rest of the world. Until now, that is. Smile

ALTERS
Not to be confused with the American Metalcore band of the same name. No, this band are Poles apart from Metal, as they're an Eclectic Prog band from an unpronounceable town somewhere in Poland. The music is dark and experimental and sounds like King Crimson in parts, only better. Uh-oh, here comes trouble. Anyway, if you're a fan of King Crimson, you won't be disappointed. Embarrassed

AM FOST LA MUNTE SI MI-A PLACUT     I Climbed the Mountain and Loved It, is the intriguing English translation of this Romanian band's name. This Post-Rock band are no strangers to Metal Archives and they also won a Romanian Metalheads Award for best new band, so if you like your post-communist Post Rock on the heavier side, then this is the band for you. Their music is probably not worth climbing a mountain to hear though, in all honesty, as they sound like so many other Post Rock bands of the same ilk, so it all gets to be much of a sameness. Anyway, with that said, their latest 2022 album hasn't yet made its way onto ProgArchives, so you can hear it here first on this blog - if you so wish.  Smile

AMAROK
One of the remarkable things about Crossover Prog artist Amarok is that no two albums sound alike, so expect the unexpected. Polish multi-instrumentalist Michal Wojtas is the man behind the sound of Amarok, with musical influences including Pink Floyd, Porcupine Tree and especially Mike Oldfield on Amarok's first self-titled album.

AMPACITY
A heavy Space Rock band from Poland with the capacity to ramp up the volume to maximum Ampacity, so better keep the ear muffs handy, because this band are no cotton candy. Ouch

ANA NEVER    Godspeed to the Emperors of Serbian Post-Rock! Ana Never are from the quaint town of Subotica in the autonomous province of Vojvodina. Things are rather quiet there these days in Vojvodina with no more Explosions in the Sky (thank goodness!) in this former war-torn province. For entertainment in Subotica, you could pass the time playing Subbuteo, enjoy a glass of slivovitz at one of the many bars and cafes, or alternatively, get together with your fellow Serbs and form your own post-communist Post Rock band.
 Never say Never. Smile
