Henry Cow has worked with some poppy stuff (like "War" off IPoL with Slapp Happy) and again in their collaboration with Slapp Happy on Desperate Straits.

Watching while most appreciating a sunset in the moment need not diminish all the glorious sunsets I have observed before. It can be much like that with music for me.

My music isn't Henry Cow though.
![]() And since when is "War" poppy? If you showed most people that, they would NOT call it poppy. ![]() Edited by MovingPictures07 - March 11 2009 at 15:23 |

But I'm not most people.
![]() Incidentally, It's the only track of Henry Cow I ever recognised from the radio. |

Yes, poppy it is, and that's one of the major reasons I don't like it

"Catchy" does not equal "poppy."
"Pop" music has a definite structure (perhaps with some variations), and is to be distinguished from "popular" music. I've heard all four Henry Cow studio albums, and there's nothing pop-oriented about any of them. I've listened to both albums from Casualties of Applied Metaphysics, and there is likewise nothing pop-oriented about them either. I could make a strong argument that they belong in Avant, and a somewhat weaker one that they could belong in electronic. But Crossover? What? |

Robert, of course pop and popular music can be synonymous, so one doesn't necessarily need to make that distinction ("poppy" is an adjective). From the OED: POP 1. (adj) In a popular or modern style 2. of performing, or relating to pop music 1, (noun) (in full pop music) commercial popular music.... But that's by-the-by and arguing semantics is often a dull, tedious exercise. I never said, or meant to imply, that catchy equalled poppy. ![]() Here's a fun little link on avant-pop -- http://www.altx.com/manifestos/avant.pop.manifesto.html EDIT: Apologies for the silly digression ![]() ![]() Edited by Logan - March 12 2009 at 01:45 |

I am listenting to the newest album now, and I already think that Electronic is out of the question. There are too many moments where the songs become actual compositions with real instruments being a part of the experience. If all of the songs were mainly electronica-based, maybe I would understand, but to me, RIO/Avant-Prog is the perfect place for these guys.
![]() P.S. I honestly hope RIO and Avant DON'T split, as mentioned earlier, because frankly those two genres intertwine so much, it would be very, very difficult determining which bands go in what category. Edited by p0mt3 - April 04 2009 at 18:32 |

I haven't found any other topic on CoAM on PA, so here we go)
"Ask the Machine" is fun, but a bit too amateurish and directionless. I liked the second half of "Operation", "Raindance" coda and some bits from "The Machine" (despite its terrible FruityLoops drums), but everything other seemed to be filler to me ![]() |
