Hi. Could you perhaps recommend a clean vocals Opeth album?
I didn't even know they had them and might give them another chance.
Damnation (2003)
Heritage (2011)
Pale Communion (2014)
Those are the 3 whole non-grunting albums they have released so far, though surely they will continue that way. What dissapoints me is that those albums have just about no metal in theim either, and I wanted metal Opeth without grunting. Now, besides those albums, there are some songs without grunting that I also like a lot: - Soldier of Fortune (Deep Purple cover). - Remember Tomorrow (Iron Maiden cover). - Would? (cover also, I just forgot from who... I think Alice in Chains). - Den Standinga Resan (Marie Fredrickson cover... yes, the one from Roxette). - Epilogue. - Face of Melinda. - Harvest. - A Fair Judgement. - Atonement.
And Watershed, though still a grunting album, has already many songs without them: - Coil. - Burden. - Porcelain Heart. - Hex Omega.
Also, I very much prefer the live version of Damnation on the album "Lamentations", specially Closure, which is my favourite song from the album (and one of my favourites from the band). And "The Drapery Falls" though it's got grunting, is so brilliant that I can't help but love it, specially the version on Lamentations too.
I do like flutes, as well as other not commonly rock instruments, in prog... but I would love to hear some Bagpipes too. I just got an album from Corvus Corax a few months ago and really loved it... it would be great to have some prog version of that band.

The idea among many that prog bands aren't worth listening to unless the vocals/lyrics are in English.
Actually, for me if a band whose mother language isn't english sings in english, it's a downside. If I find bands that I like from different countries, I prefer them to sing in their native tongue... it's more interesting, even if I don't understand the lyrics. And I believe that's particularly important on RPI.
That's me as well. People singing in their first language is so much more rewarding, ultimately. I can't listen to poorly executed English vocals that some band is forcing themselves into, for what they think will be wider appeal.
The problem is that, even though I like better the songs in other languages... in the end it is a wider appeal if they sing in english. Though perhaps RPI is famoust enough within prog circles that people who look for it actually enjoy, or at least are ready to apreciate the italian singing.

I think the most progressive genre as a whole right now with the most good albums coming out in the last 3 years is black metal and the little offshoots related to it.

Perhaps O/T for this thread, but I'd be interested to hear any recommendations, especially the little offshoots. I also find this an interesting area, though my knowledge is sketchy. But I enjoy Aluk Todolo, Pensées Nocturnes, Jute Gyte, Nocturnal Poisoning, and thinking of getting the recent album by Todestoss.

Good observation. I think largely correct. Perhaps outside of RPI some of the countries might eek out a few more sales if they use English but I think they'll pay a price in quality in the long run. It's just better with the proper language and hopefully bands take the long view. I recently gave a positive review to a Russian band and praised them for using their own language....they acted quite stunned that non-Russians were paying attention to them. I told them there are many of us that appreciate authenticity.
With regard to RPI i like your observation. Such a high percentage of Italian bands do stick to Italian that fans expect it. And in the case of Italy using English will turn off some of us. I won't go near an RPI band singing in English and I'm not alone in that regard.

-Pink Floyd makes pretty rudimentary three-minute pop songs and extend them with wailing sounds. Also, they are not prog. -ELP and their albums are severely underrated because of the silly argument they weren't "serious enough". -Steven Wilson and Porcupine Tree are not that good. -Peter Gabriel's Genesis is one of the greatest things ever in prog music, but I find Trespass to be one of the worst albums they ever released.
Two random guys agreed to shake hands. Just Because. They felt like it, you know. It was an agreement of sorts...a random agreement.
