What a brilliant thread! I have 24/40 of the albums and a few more on MP'3 format.

Ive got the special issue, I dont think its actually going to tell me a lot i dont already know but i'm enjoying reading it. I agree with everything Fitzcarroldo said especially the bit about it being a great introduction for newcomers to the genre.

The issue that i liked a lot was the Psychedelia issue Q had a few months back.

It's easy to pick holes in something like this (and I will probably do so at length), but it's good to see something positive in the mainstream media for once.
'Like so many of you
I've got my doubts about how much to contribute
to the already rich among us...'

I also read that one but it was a Mojo thing that we got in Brussels. I have a feeling that those specials come under both names - the Rock Icons and the Greatest Albums issues came under  both names .

I maybe wrong though, im at work and can't look at the issue, it had a pic of Hendrix on the front.
It had a list of the most psychedelic albums ever (although they have missed a few underground gems its a good list) which i am trying to work my way through. Thank god for soulseek!

Listing A Little Bit. . .

In the new Q special on Prog Rock there’s a list of what their panel of white-coated boffins regard as essential in the world of musical adventures. So how many of these albums do you own?

Less than ten means you're in a relationship and have friends who don't have pizza stains on their beards. In fact none of your friends have beards. You have friends! Well you get the idea.

  1. Dark Side Of The Moon by Pink Floyd *
  2. Foxtrot by Genesis *

As ever some odd choices bubbled up there from a so-called panel of experts, especially from the final  positions some of these obtained in this Q chart.

Only have 20/40- 50%

Yup , That's the one. good read, too! Slightly too shallow (not deep enough) but entertaining.

I've got fifteen of these albums. I think it's scandalous that those whiny navel gazers got in at number 10, while 'Hero And Heroine' and 'Bedside Manners Are Extra' weren't included.

How dare they? I don't understand that people care to make this kind of lists, without knowing anything. Lots Of good albums her, but they missed a lot and replaced it with bands like radiohead and Mars Volta. I would not call theese gus to recomend me albums....

It is said to be the first Test-pressing of the corean release??

Hmmm... I've only 9 out of the list.  I guess I've been playing safe with the biggies.  Must try harder.

Have to say though, congrats to Q/Mojo, I think it's an excellent synopsis of the main players in prog over the years and a good introduction to anyone who might be just a bit curious as to what it's all about.

They tried to stick together all the bits that would fit

A nice list, but entirely too safe...so I now present to you
This list according to Cliff: First off the list should have been "The Top 50 most influencial progressive bands, and their proggiest albums".  No band would be listed twice, and it wouldn't be in any particular order.  However, of the ones listed (bold=discs I own):

  1. Dark Side Of The Moon by Pink Floyd - Meddle (or Animals) would have been a better choice.  I own 12 PF cds.
  2. Foxtrot by Genesis - I agree with this choice.  I own 14 Genesis CDs
  3. Close To The Edge by Yes - I also agree here.  I own 21 Yes CDs
  4. In The Court Of The Crimson King by King Crimson - I would have picked Red.  I own 18 KC discs
  5. Brain Salad Surgery by ELP - I agree here.  I own 8 ELP discs.
  6. A Farewell To Kings by Rush - NOPE!  Hemispheres, Moving Pictures and 2112 all rate higher by me!  I own 16 Rush discs.
  7. Aqualung by Jethro Tull - Wrong again!  Passion Play or Thick As A Brick deserve this slot.  I own 14 JTs
  8. Space Ritual by Hawkwind - This is a band I could never get into, and I believe Gong would be a better fit in this slot.  I recognize the importance of this album among fans, so it should stay on the list.  I have heard many Hawkwind, own 0.
  9. Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield - This on the other hand...yeah it should stay on the list but near the bottom.  I own 2 MO discs.
  10. Ok Computer by Radiohead -  If Gong takes the #8 slot, then this should move up to #9.  I horribly underrated album in the prog community. I own 5 of their discs.
  11. Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd - No! No repeats of bands!  How about we replace this with a nod to the Itlalians:  Crac! by Area will do nicely!
  12. The Yes Album by Yes - Dammit, no repeats!  But since I don't want to be sliding bands all around this list, how about we stick in Kansas - Leftoverture...uh, Golden Earring but no Kansas?  Are they high?  I own 8 Kansas albums
  13. Hot Rats by Frank Zappa - I don't own this one, but my inclination would be to insert You Can't Do That Onstage Anymore, Volume 6: The Helsinki Concert.  I own 18 FZ discs.
  14. The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway by Genesis - No, not again.  How about some Nektar - Journey To The Center Of The Eye instead?  I only have 3 Nektars at this time.
  15. The Least We Can Do Is Wave To Each Other by VdGG - Pawnhearts or Godbluff, perhaps.  I own 7 VDGG masterpieces.
  16. Octupus by Gentle Giant - I would have chosen Freehand.  I own 9 GGs
  17. Misplaced Childhood by Marillion I agree totally.  I own 9 Marillo discs
  18. Frances The Mute by The Mars Volta - This is the better of the 2, so I'll go with it!
  19. In The Land of Grey And Pink by Caravan - This is the only Caravan CD I own, and I am not crazy about it.
  20. Third by Soft Machine -  This is the only Soft Machine I own, and it took me two years to understand this album.
  21. Lateralus by Tool - What I have heard on the radio can stay on the radio.  They are more interesting than Dream Theatre though!
  22. Larks’ Tongues In Aspic by King Crimson - Nope, sorry already did the Crims.  Lets stick Magma into this position.  I don't have any yet, but I know that I like 'em!
  23. Moonmadness by Camel - I'd go with Mirage...I will be getting this one soon though!
  24. Moving Waves by Focus - Aside from Hocus Pocus, I have heard nothing by this band.  Very high on my wish list!
  25. A night At The Opera by Queen - If there was any Queen that deserves to be on this list, it would be Queen II.  I think Anglagard - Hybris should check in here!
  26. Pampered Menial by Pavlov’s Dog - Don't know, haven't heard it.
  27. Agaetis Byrjun by Sigur Ros - I have ( ), but don't think much of it.  Let's just swap this with Brian Eno (pick one), drop it to #50 and call it a day.
  28. L by Steve Hillage - I only have Fish Rising and have never heard L.  By all accounts it is better.  Still, a strange choice.  I am going to insert Touch by Touch instead.
  29. Five Bridges by The Nice - I can see this.  I used to have this on cassette, but haven't replaced it yet.
  30. Music In A Dolls House by Family - #4 on my current wishlist.
  31. Roxy Music by Roxy Music - I'll agree with this.
  32. Moontan by Golden Earring - Belongs at the bottom of the list that Queen should be on.
  33. All Together Now by Argent - All together, NO!  How about the one that started it all, THE BEATLES - SGT. PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND
  34. Hatfield And The North by Hatfield And The North -  I own this Rotter's Club.  I agree with their choice.
  35. Flying Teapot by Gong - I do not own this one, but I cannot see how it could be better than YOU.  I own 7 Gong discs.
  36. Dance of The Lemmings by Amon Duul II -  I am familiar with this disc, but it is not ever in my top-50 wishlist.  I hearby replace this one with God & Three Persons by The Residents.
  37. In Search Of The Lost Chord by The Moody Blues - Ick.
  38. Phaedra by Tangerine Dream - I own 3 TD discs, this is my favorite.
  39. Once Again by Barclay James Harvest - I'm not in any rush to check out this band.
  40. 666 by Aphrodite’s Child - Also very high on my list
So I own 21 of the disks listed, and a total of  178 discs by the artists mentioned.

What was left off of their list?  Excuse me...The Beatles, Touch, The Residents, Nektar, Anglagard, Area, Kansas (!), David Bowie, Banco, PFM, Captain Beefheart, Colosseum, Happy The Man, Transatlantic, Spock's Beard, and U.K..  WTF??

WTF??

Spock's Beard? They don't belong on there. Definitely Happy The Man, PFM, Banco, Bowie and possibly Transatlantic.

Has someone in this mag had an Epiphany????????? I stopped  purchasing this magazine because it has writers who are so insular in their views on most things progressive. Most are completely ignorant and obnoxious and obsessed by the mundacity of mainstream music.
