Post-Rock is a strange term when you think about it.  I guess if the term had never been invented I would probably call it space rock, or some branch off of space rock.

I think that's a bit too generalized for Post Rock

Yeah, that could work too.  But "indie rock" is a slippery slope itself.  The main thing that comes to mind when I think of indie rock is fashion rather than musical content.

Also, Scott, you might like these guys. Ex-GBV bassist Jim Greer's newest band which was the opening act at the GBV concert I went to. Pretty good, even a revamped version of Trendspotter Acrobat.

Alternative rock is generally more mainstream, indie rock is more like what we used to call college rock (meaning you'd only hear it on college radio stations).  Indie rock used to mean music not released on one of the big corporate labels (Warner Brothers, Atlantic, etc), now there are plenty of indie rock bands on major labels, and to compound the issue, some of those so-called "indie labels" are really just satellite branches of major labels anyway.

So, to overly simplify things:

Alternative rock -- rock that's mainstream-popular (or aims to be popular) but has roots in stuff that used to be underground rock.  Ranges from singer/songwritery stuff (e.g. Beck) to heavy hard rock (e.g. Soundgarden)

Indie rock -- rock that's not mainstream-popular but aims its sights on some standard of underground cool.   Ranges from "twee pop" (e.g. Belle and Sebastian) to classic rock revivalism (e.g. Built to Spill, GBV) to Noisy guitar rock (but not metal) (e.g. ... uh.... I dunno... Boredoms?)

Boredoms is a bad example of "noisy guitar rock" (they're much more than that), but I'm drawing a blank there.  I wanted to say Sonic Youth, but they're kind of borderline mainstream.
